Pelican rifle case's opinions wanted.

Save your money and get a Plano hard case. Same thing but half the cost.

It's funny you brought this up, it has been my newest research obsession. I've never owned anything beyond cheap cases. With the purchase of a custom gun I thought a nice case would top it off. I looked in to Plano cases to see how they compared to the Pelicans. From what I can tell the Plano are good cases but the Pelicans are the top of the line case. The Pelicans come with the pluckable foam which some people really like. Personally if I'm spending that much money on a case I won't want it to fit to the closest square. I would rather have it cut to my specific situation. To do this at home there's two different methods, electric turkey carving knife and hot wire cutting. I've seen some good work with the carving knife but if I'm going to do it I think I will go with the hot wire. You can build or buy one, I think I will buy one and loan it out to people who want to cut their own foam.

Either way keep us informed I would like to see how you make out.

I picked up a double rife pelican case at a pawn shop and have nothing bit good things to say about it. The only bad thing is my buddy borrowed it two years ago and has forgotten to return it.

Either storm or pelican are great. Simply the best case available in my opinion. If I recall correctly the storm cases are a smidge lighter duty version of the pelicans, and may have a couple extra closing buckles of slightly different design. I pick based on case dimensions meeting my requirements, not storm vs pelican quality. Either storm or pelican will not let you down.

As far as the interior foam, for cases this good I recommend mycasebuilder.com for the ultimate custom foam. You have complete control over every aspect of design and layout, including different types of foam.

If you want the real deal go with the pelican. I traveled all over the world diving with my gear in pelican cases and never had a single problem. I eventually used one for clothes after destroying 5 or so good suitcases over the span of a few years.

I bought 6 of these for 50 bucks each decades ago and they have been all around the world. If you can find them they are great cases.

I have lugged around the Pelicans around the world and personally would rather buy 2 Plano cases of the same size for the same money.

Just flooded the basement while we were away for a week and the Pelican had zero water or dampness inside. Even though it was standing in 10" of water.

Get the egg crate foam and do not custom cut. Just put the gun inside and close. A lot more versatile and less hassle.

The more I check out Custom Foam Case Inserts - MyCaseBuilder.com the more I think I will try them out. I've found the cases other places cheaper without foam. Then have these guys custom cut it seems like a decent deal. I'm still not sure what road I'm going to take, but there are some interesting options out there.

Sounds kind of like you turned the SPS into a PSS. Doesn't Hogue or H-S Precision make the stocks on the 700 PSS's? My Barrett M99A1 came with a Pelican. Those things are epic; but be forewarned they are heavy as shit. I take my stuff to the range in the back of my Deere Gator using one of those cheapo $29 specials from Walmart or wherever the hell I bought it. Are you getting a Pelican so it can go on a commercial airplane? Because for the back of a Gator that crappy plastic thing works fine and dandy at like a 10th of the weight of a Pelican.

Pelican cases are just too heavy and expensive. I wouldn't buy one, unless there is a compelling reason. They are not practical for average use.

When you have to lug it around all day plus other gear, you will feel differently about a case, which is about 4-5 times the weight of the rifle. It's fine for escorting a safe queen to the range once a year. There are cheaper and lighter cases that will protect your rifle just as well.

I have the Plano hard one for my AR. I definitely like it.

I'll be looking for a hard case possibly for my 308 as well, but probably slimmer. I might just go with an overpadded soft case

You must have some ultra light rifles. My bolt gun is about 12 pounds. The pelican case is about 23.

If the op is looking to transport an expensive rifle via air a pelican is a good choice. There are others that protect about as well for less money but pelican is top of the line and you know it will do it's job. That being said I bought a gander mountain tactical hard case. I think it's a rebranded Plano tactical. I got it for 30 percent off and it's great. It's heavy but not pelican weight.

Pelican 1750 is over 25lb, some of their cases are close to 40lb.
23lb is still heavy.

No one is carrying it around over long distances. They are not designed for that. They are the best when it comes to protecting valuable equipment. I would guess over 99% of people don't need the level of protection they offer though and could be well served with cheaper options.

Depends on the activity you are involved in. You end up doing a bunch of 40lb lifting (case and rifle) throughout the day and dragging it around short and long distances, sometimes uphill, in addition to all other gear. It dampens the fun factor a little. You will never see pelican cases at Camp Perry ranges.

Oddly I never see anyone talk about these cases when the topic comes up, and I have no idea why, but take a look at a Seahorse brand case. They're American made and somewhat less expensive than Pelicans but actually have some extra features and the very high level of quality in my opinion. For a rifle that would be the Seahorse SE1530 . I've compared them and I actually think it beats out the Pelican 1750 slightly in a few places. It's also a few pounds lighter and actually has more space.
Pelican 1750 Inside Dimensions: 42.00 x 13.50 x 5.25
Seahorse 1530 Inside Dimensions: 44.50"L x 14.29"W x 6.22"D
The seahorse comes in a few variants I believe, with/without built in keyed locks and such , but the most comparable model (w/metal latches) can still be had for ~$50 cheaper than the 1750 if you shop around some. Maybe more like $30 or so if you don't, and depending on model and color. For some reason the desert tan ones seem to be more expensive, and that seems to be all that's in stock on amazon right now for the non-keyed model with the full layered foam.

That said, as others have mentioned, the Plano case is pretty decent if you don't need to go all out and don't need quite so extreme a level of protection. It is not in my opinion quite of the same build quality (At least as the Seahorse. I don't own a Pelican and haven't seen one in a while really), but it'll do the job and cost significantly less.
