One longtime Republican leader appraised Pelosi’s backing away from the extreme option as a calculated tactic by a veteran Beltway strategist.

“This was a shrewd move by Pelosi,” former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato (R – NY) told The Post. “She looks like a statesperson.”

“It puts the Democrats in a more responsible, governmental position,” he said. “It’s a way of de-fanging the left-wing radicals in the party.”

Pelosi’s wariness towards impeachment comes days after one such progressive firebrand, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D – NY) walked back her own calls for impeachment, saying she would ultimately defer to party leadership.

D’Amato also said that Pelosi’s comments could reflect a move towards moderation to win over purple voters with the 2020 election inching closer.
