My daughter has an unrestricted NYS pistol permit. But now lives in Indiana. Home visiting, can she legally come with me to the range? Will the range check current drivers license to verify residency?

I’ve never been to a range in NY that asked to see a permit, as it’s none of their business, but I didn’t live in Orange County either.

Why can’t she just keep her NY permit with her Indiana address on it?

The permit was issued when she lived in NY, so it has a NYS address that no longer matches her drivers license.

The range I use always asks to see the permit, and I didn't recall about looking at any other form of ID, but they did not.

She should be able to do an amendment and change her address to her new one.

Never been carded or even asked for a membership card at a range - ever. Went to quite a few of them in my lifetime.

As long as you aren't being destructive and reckless, they don't care.

I am a member of a few of local ranges because I see great value in keeping them open.

I don't believe that you are actually required by state law to notify the issuing agency of a change in residence.

The penal law states:
Notification of any change of residence shall be made in writing by any
licensee within ten days after such change occurs, and a record of such
change shall be inscribed by such licensee on the reverse side of his or
her license. Elsewhere than in the city of New York, and in the counties
of Nassau and Suffolk, such notification shall be made to the executive
department, division of state police, Albany...

Tell her to process the change of address.

You must be a NYS resident to *get* a pistol permit, but not to keep one.

She can put in for the change of address, and as long as she keeps renewing it she should be fine.

There is precedent and case law to support not being a resident and still holding a NY State carry license. It's not advertised much, but it's out there... Can't remember the case. But whatever... Honestly all the law says is to inform the licensing officer of an address change! That's it! And if they revoke then SUE the bastards as she still has business here (with you). Domicile isn't required in NY for a permit!

And I agree with all above, never been asked, and I wouldn't comply if I were...

In Westchester County, the handbook for pistol licenses states we have 10 days to notify the agency of any address change.

There's actually instructions on how to renew on the NYSP website.

If you move out of state you no longer have a NY driver's license, so you can't do it online.

Their instructions are to mail the paper form with some modifications.
