I havent got anything for you, but unlike some people around here, I could at least entertain the notion that one would need to do so in order to permanently modify a 14.5" barrel to legal length.
He might be referring to a thread protector.

I couldn’t find a smith here in Orange County. So I ended up sending my barrel to a smith in Texas that did work on an SKS that I used to have. It was a 2 week turn around time.

Thanks - but I was hoping to do the job myself. i was just looking for someone who had done it before that could keep an eye on what I was doing.I couldn’t find a smith here in Orange County. I pinned and welded a muzzle brake on a while back. The hardest part was drilling a straight hole in the muzzle brake because the part that is threaded was tapered on the outside. Using a stubby starter bit, or using an endmill to make a flat spot first would make it go a lot easier.
For welding, I used a flux core mig welder. This isn't an ideal choice because of splatter. I wrapped everything near the hole in a few layers of aluminum foil to protect from the splatter before I started. Tig would be much cleaner.
I forget what I used for a pin, but if I were doing it now, I'd probably just use a bit cut from the shank of the drill bit I used for the hole. It should be a pretty close fit.

When all else fails.....red locktite, drill and pin with a dab of JB weld over the hole.
