Pistol permit amendments and gunbroker

Hi,

I have a sort of idea to save me money on a pistol I want. It's on gunbroker but I want to avoid paying the transfer fee and shipping and all that garbage. The store that's selling it happens to be within driving distance of me. I did some napkin math and determined that I would save 200 dollars by simply not buying the pistol locally because local gun stores are nuts if they thing I'm paying 100 dollars markup plus tax on their stuff.

My question is, has anyone used a gunbroker receipt for a bill of sale for amending your pistol permit? My logic is that I'd buy the pistol online and use the bill of sale to get my permit amended then go drive to the store and pick it up.

Is your bill of sale from an FFL? And run the proper paper work for Firearm purchase in NY? You are not going to cheat the system you still have to pay for transfer from the store and do a background check.

There may be an issue if the seller is out of state, surely if you don't have a permit that covers outside of NY.
You'll have to pay sales tax if the vendor is in NY.

I bought my first pistol from a kitchen table FFL out of town ( 1.5hrs) as he was willing to hold it till my permit was approved. I was able to get the free mags that Springfield was offering as my purchase date was withing their timeline.
None of the local sellers were willing to hold the paid gun while the permit was being processed. Took a couple of months.
His pricing was better than the local guys as well.

I bought the gun online via emails, took the receipt printed off my computer to the pistol bureau, got my coupon and drove to Rochester once I received my letter.
I did have to pay sales tax as we were both in NY. There was no transfer/NICS fee.

Yes the only real thing I'm paying is sales tax and gas. The FFL I would be buying from is in state.

Weather you realize it or not the dealer is putting his cost and charges tacked onto the final price. So I am totally lost at your logic in saving money buy buying it online then in person. You confusing me seriously. Your saying buying in person from the FFL is cheaper then buying online. That is a given. Less additional transfers and no shipping.

Will your clerk do amending From a gun broker receipt? There is no everyone does it the same here in NY. I think asking them is where the question should go.

Ok lemme start over. There is a pistol I want on gunbroker and its a lot cheaper than what I can find at a local gun store near me. I noticed that the seller is in NY and he is an FFL and his store's location is within driving distance from me (about 100 miles away or 30 dollars in gas combined). Normally when I buy a gun on gunbroker its shipped to an FFL significantly closer to me and I pay shipping and a transfer fee which can be about 50-75 dollars. I rationalize that I could visit the gun store in person to avoid shipping and transfer fee from another FFL. My idea is basically I buy the gun on gunbroker, use the receipt on gunbroker as proof of purchase that my county clerk would use to amend my permit and get the coupon. Later I would drive to the seller's gunstore and pick it up in person giving him the coupon.

Will your clerk do amending from a gun broker receipt?

I'd have to call and ask, from what I recall from my first pistol they want a make, model, caliber and serial number.

Perhaps the seller will send you a store receipt vs a Gunbroker one.

Why not just drive there and skip GunBroker all together? Just call him up, ask if they have what you want in stock, ask how much, and pick it up.

I think something like this might lead to making two trips. A trip to go buy it and get a receipt to take to the county then another trip to go pick it up, thats a lot of driving.

This info was on my receipt.
Perhaps the seller will send you a store receipt vs a Gunbroker one.

Maybe I'll just get both just for future reference.

Perfectly legal. Arrange a transaction with the dealer, have him email you a receipt, get your amendment, go drive and pick up.

YMMV if you are in one of the difficult counties (NYC).

A couple of possible wrinkles:

- Lots of dealers sell pistols on GB and drop ship them from the wholesaler. That means it may not be in stock.

- Lots of dealers charge different prices for pick up vs. shipping. Only fair, given the extra NYS paperwork needed.

A good FFL will email you the receipt, saving you from doing the “coupon shuffle.” You make the purchase, they email receipt, you take it to PPO for amendment, then you pick up pistol from FFL.

My county only accepts receipts from FFL that are authorized to sell pistols in ny.

If your guy is a pistol seller in ny you should be gtg.

Are you sure you are saving money? What about your drive time cost etc etc. my time is very valuable. It sounds like 3 hours driving. I figured my time
worth a min of $100 per hour. So i would not do it.

What is your time worth? What do you get paid per hour at your regular job?

You're not going to "game" the system... If it's a LGS and they list it cheaper online than in store, call them out on it, I'd bet they work out a good deal for ya'... And for the matter, it "IS" a transfer, transfer from the seller, to you! Doesn't matter it's a dealer, they possess and own the pistol until you purchase it. What's the big deal anyways...? You got to "Pay" to play... Is the way it's always been, and will be.

GB is OK, but is usually final sale, etc., and unless something is crazy wrong/misrepresented in sale, you'll have nobody to butch with. A LGS will make efforts to remedy bad situations as their reputation weighs heavily on repeat sales. There's one or two shops I won't step foot in again, lol

But remember, they got to make money too, it's a business!
