Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple says pistol permits in New York are surging due to fear of coming government action against guns.
“I think there’s a great fear that the country is leaning towards some sort of ban, [and] people want to beat the government to the punch,” Apple said. “We’re getting rocked with applications. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people who want their pistol permits.”


Times Union, the number of applications “have doubled year-to-year in Albany [County].”

The surge is being seen in other counties, too.

Columbia County Sheriff David Bartlett pointed out that permit applications in his county were up “186 percent” during the first six months of 2016. Rensselaer County Sheriff Patrick Russo said they processed “about 300 pistol permit applications in 2014, about 600 in 2015, and is on track to handle more than 1,000 applications this year.”

I like the fact that women are pushing up the numbers. Mainly because most women are or will be involved in bringing up children, and will not fall for the crap people like Shallow Witts are trying to peddle via Moms Demand Action. Women are definitely getting more involved and its great. When we started dating my wife didn't even like the idea of having a gun in the house (not sure where she got it from as her dad grew up handling them and is definitely not anti-gun). Now with a little prodding from me when I went for my CCW she got hers and we are waiting for our licenses to be amended so she can pick up her own pistol. Coincidentally 4 or 5 of the ladies we know from our kids playing soccer have gotten theirs and even my 60'ish year old aunt got hers. In fact, the class we took for our CCW was taught by a woman and there's a women's shooting club locally that meets once a month.

Crime is also creeping up. Seems like there are more and more reports of violent crime. I'm sure that is also a consideration.

Yup, lots more women: applying, getting their licenses, buying a gun and asking for training. I have taught a bunch of New Women Shooters how to shoot, in the past few weeks, alone! Plenty of guys too but, it's nice to see more women understanding that self defense and personal security are your own responsibility!

I'm fortunate enough to have a pro gun girlfriend. We took the pistol safety course together but she still hasn't been called yet for her finger printing appointment. There were more women in the safety course than men. Very happy to see that.

Unfortunately she should be apprehensive. In fact if she better understood that the real risks are not a "loss of a few things" she would appreciate your concern. The local risk is much greater than she assumes. Unless there is an arrest or serious injury requiring Hospitalization, violent home invasions are not reported in local papers like the Poughkeepsie Journal.

She likely grew up in a home that never burned down as well, does she use that to justify not having any smoke detectors or fire extinguishers in the house now? Perhaps she does, some people do reason that way. The gun and smoke detector are not for when you think there will be problems - if you know there is going to be a problem you fix it or go somewhere else. The gun and smoke detector are for times that most people hope never happen. They are both small and stay tucked out of the way if they are not needed, but if the worst happens and you do need them they are the difference between life and death.
