This sounds like a terrible tragic story.

I know these stories are usually worded to make the public get angry at law enforcement, but it's sad none the less.


LEO's what is the process of what is it like when on duty and you have to decide to shoot a dog or not?

I know there are the always popular stories of police raiding the wrong home because they get a bad tip and kill some innocent family's pet, but this story is quite a bit different.

Most of the leos are not very good shooters, They don't practice, shooting is a diminishing skill. Most leos I know couldn't hit the broadside of a building standing 5ft in front of it. Its amazing the agencies don't train them more....Its here in NYc like this anyway, not sure about rest of state or country but I suspect its about the same.

The story says they believe they rounds were ricochets, so it may be more of a case of needing more safety/ballistics training, although that seems a bit far fetched unless they were shooting at a concrete slab..

If that's actually the case, then the victim could have just as easily been an innocent neighbor's 5yr old.

It must be different out here in the sticks.
Most of our local leos and sheriffs are hunters and lifelong firearm owners.
When you go to a range around here, half or more of the shooters are leos.
All really good 2a supporters.
The sheriffs have a pistol and rifle team that compete.

We used to "skip" Bullets off of a canal when we where kids......but we still called em ricochets.

There are many stories out there of rounds ricocheting off a pibble's head. It's actually documented as one of the reasons why the Rochester PD switched from 9mm to .45 several years ago.

That said, one of my best friends and shooting partners is a Trooper. He agrees that most cops don't shoot nearly enough, and even fewer actually take a real interest in training.

NYPD shooting accuracy and number of incidents are both in the best in the nation. The media doesn't tell you that, and you believe it, but the police commissioners report which is released annually proves it every year.
