I saw a Ford Explorers yesterday, one marked and one unmarked. Both have what I think is armor around the engine block.

This is an interesting upgrade that I have not noticed before. Is this solely because of the riots?

Why would they armor the engine block? I guess reinforcing it for ramming would make sense, but actual armor?

What, do they think everyone in the Country has a 50cal? (I don't, but wish I had the money to, just because!)

Have they completely armored over the windows, too? After all, the quickest way to disable a SUV is to eliminate the driver.

I couldn't see the radiator, what I did see is two things, made of something, on the sides of where the radiator should be and a third in the center staggered behind the flanking peices.

I'm curious about details...there's only so much you can do to enclose the cooling system. It's always going to be a vulnerability.

If true, is a ridiculous introduction of military spec to local law enforcement! This is not a military event, although the military has been called upon. If true, someone would have some explaining to do as to justifying the expenditure and rationale behind doing so.

And this in itself, associates what may be just some of the issue with contemporary LE, the introduction of military doctrine, technique and methods into LE, which are misplaced... I can see armor protection for the interior, as has been done. But the protection and sustainable operation of a police vehicle with armor playing the engine is just ridiculous! Did they reinforce the underside too for IED? Lmao... anyways, I believe that is what "SWAT" teams were established for. "SPECIAL"... Being the main ingredient! You don't need to constantly push overwhelming force in everyone's face, might as well just use Humvees for patrol vehicles, Blackhawks circling overhead in surveillance, drones buzzing then, lmao ;)

I agree too, this will do nothing to protect the vehicle, and actually cause premature failure due to lack of adequate cooling! Let alone the amount of time the vehicle sits not moving in the city environment!
