Police: weapon used in murder suicide was stolen rental from Mason gun shop
LANSING TOWNSHIP (WILX) Police say the gun used in a murder suicide at a Lansing Township business Monday was a stolen rental from a firearms shop in Mason.

Lansing Township Police Chief Adam Kline says 30 year old Timothy Olin rented a semi-automatic handgun at Total Firearms on Monday afternoon. Kline says Olin purchased ammunition and used the indoor range at the facility for about an hour. He left the shop, without returning the weapon, around 3:21 p.m.

At about 4:02 p.m, police say Olin shot his former girlfriend Rachael Duncan at the JoAnn Fabrics store on W. Saginaw Highway in Lansing Township, before turning the gun on himself. Duncan, 26, was a store employee. Police say she had filed a personal protection order against Olin.

Investigators also learned that Olin tried to obtain a handgun from the Dicker and Deal second hand store in Lansing on March 15th, but was turned down after failing a background check.

I guess you'd need to use NICS for firearms rentals. That'd certainly raise the cost of rentals.

How do you let a gun rental walk out the door? Very sloppy IMO. If I'm not mistaken it doesn't cost a store anything to do a NICS ... The fees involved are service fees for their time.

That's the part I don't get either. How did they just let one of their rentals walk out. The NICS side is moot to me if they don't pay enough attention to not allow their firearms to be stolen.

what i don't get is how did he even rent one ?? from the The Firing Pin range/rental rules .. no PP no shootie with pistol .. oh not in NY .. not up on there laws there ..
