Routine Security at the Capital was a joke each time I've been there. Unbelievable. Day to day is a cross between a weak TSA example at the entrances and armed Mall cops wandering about. Security features (locks, cameras, proximity detectors, delay features,) were not impressive. I assume they had much stronger emergency response and tactical teams but I can't vouch for it. While walking around, I overheard a new plainclothes officer on what seemed to be a training walk through or turnover asking about when it was ok to shoot someone (he honestly did not have a handle on procedures, policy, or expectations in that area). I shared my informal findings with the House Speaker's Office (they knew who I was and understood I was a retired subject matter expert in this area.) I doubt any corrective actions were taken.

I'll likely delete this post because although security was a joke at the Capital and adjacent offices, it does not belong in this thread.

was congress in session. I mean doesn't seem kinda lax that anyone could easily walk in with several firearms and just wipe out half our government without even a passive look

Yes. In session. Voting taking place. The light bulbs in each Congressman's office signaling votes were busy.

I will not provide much detail or any critical specifics, but I had free unencumbered access everywhere. To be fair I was not there as a tourist or constituent where I might have been escourted.

A normal citizen would have to pass through a TSA type screening at entrances so careless nutcases would be filtered out but some TSA airport features are more robust.

I will not share methods, practices or specifics but sadly your comment about a horrific event is not far fetched and conceivable. I was shocked and expected more at the Capital. The security at every commercial nuclear power plant in this country is orders of magnitude more robust, no doubt. It's not even close.
