An average sighted in .30-06 bolt gun should be able to plug a 400 yard deer no problem. My sister plugged her first two deer last year with a .308 bolt at 300 yards. New hunter but some rifle experience. And then there's the open prarie hunters with .25-06. Common rifles, common calibers.
