In an early push by the eco-greenies the mantra was save the trees and use plastic bags as plastic alternatives were invented in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Finally, they banned the paper bag in NY grocery stores and plastic bags were the replacement. Now the eco-greenies proclaim that it's the plastic bags that are bad and paper bags are OK if you pay a nickel for them. Now the eco-greenies proclaim that "The public should be informed not to use plastic bags, but to use eco-friendly alternative bags made from fabric, natural fibers and paper to reduce the problems associated with plastic bag wastes." Plastic trash is are mainly an issue in the 3rd world where a vast majority of the ocean plastic pollution comes from and our contribution to that is a drop in the bucket. Plastics in the environment and plugging up sewers is a real issue, just like baby wipes and face diapers from the government induced COVID panic. Now, plastic wrap, containers and other packaging is still OK and plastic bags for the deli, the produce and your trash are also OK while paper bags for take out and alcohol are fine, but you have to walk out of the hardware store with your purchase in your hands. On the back end, some plastic goes in your recycle bin and then goes by special truck to the sorting facility where it costs more to recycle than it's worth, so it's mixed with garbage and dumped in the landfill. Fiber bags will be the next bad thing as the and they get used multiple times without cleaning which leads to health issues related to food safety, begin to clog up the waste stream and put bad chemicals into the environment. Our legislators and the eco-greenies are leading the charge and their efforts have resulted in what's kindly known as a "circle jerk".
