It has been said approximately 3% of the population, at the time, took part in our first Civil War.
It was never clear if "We The People" would win.
We had little, if any, manufacturing in this Country, no raw materials, no ships.
An America loving Patriot, then, as with now, in my opinion, would ALWAYS question the direction "We The People" was/is going.
General Arnold, a Wounded War Hero, an American Patriot, up until when he sold us out, was such a man.

Above, I mentioned "America's First Hero Sniper", Timothy Murphy, The Hero Saratoga and The Hero Of Middlefort.
Murphy was attached to Daniel Morgans Rifleman's Brigade.
1777 the order coming down, at The Battle of Saratoga, "General Frazer must die today", Murphy shimmied up a tree with his over/under Joseph Golcher Pennsylvania Long Rifle, and took out General Frazer and his replacement.
1780 while on station at Middle Fort, present day Middleburgh, Middle Fort came under attack by Tories/Democrats.
The Commandant of Middle Fort ordered his soldiers to stand down and prepared to surrender Middle Fort.
Instead, defying a direct order, under penalty of being shot on sight, Timothy Murphy instead fired on the Tory/Democrat attackers, defending and saving the Fort and became The Hero Of Middleburgh.

In your opinion, was Murphy's actions a miscalculation?

So, you pose a non sequitur as some sort of rebuttal? Really?
But what the heck, Murphy was indeed a legendary character in that time, he was even a key player in the Ambuscade of Boyd and Parker, not far from here, Ambuscade. However there is no evidence to verify that he was the actual rifleman that took out Frazier, though I do believe he was, there is virtually no way he rifle was a wender rifle which were extremely rare at that time and even rarer to find one with both barrels rifled, one would most surely have been a smooth bore, with no evidence to support that claim, I do not adhere to that part of the 'legend'. I would have to check but I don't believe Golcher was a practicing gun smith at the time and if he was would have been an apprentice most likely, all the wenders by him that I am aware of are cap locks, that did not exist at that time.
You believe what you wish to, as will I, thought I maintain enough skepticism to keep myself open to any good and verifiable information, evidence, that might come along.
Either way, I am glad you seem to enjoy learning our nations history, as do I. The ethics and morality of incidents that occur during war is an entirely different subject.
