They were British citizens living on British soil until they were abandoned in 1997 because of Chinese threats of a military take over because a 100 year lease was expiring on some of Hong Kong's expanded territories which made up a part of the Hong Kong metropolis. China agreed to keep Hong Kong "independent" for 50 years in the negotiated turn over settlement.
