Possible scammer

There is a possible scammer on the forums.

Earlier this morning, I received a DM from a new user Jaycity (only three posts). He asked if I was still in need of 458 SOCOM brass. Keep in mind, this was a request from thread at least from 3-5 months ago. He gave me an email address and said that someone he knows had some.

I contacted said person via email and was told they had two sealed, brand new Starline brass 100 CT bags at $70 each. There were numerous red flags which lead me to make this post.

1. $70 is too good of a price, since brand new a 100 CT bag is $90 at Arm or Ally.

2. The pictures initially sent were of 500 SW brass

3. I didn't respond for an hour or so and stated I was thinking how I was going to get the money for it and they immediately replied lowering a bag to $50.

4. I mentioned that the first two pictures were of 500 SW. I received another email with the correct picture this time. I downloaded the picture and used Google Lens only to find that it was a stock picture from druidhillarmory.com, the picture was even renamed to img_6487.jpeg to make it seem authentic.

5. He stated he took it the picture last week

Very simple, if you are desperate enough for the brass to take a chance on being scammed, take it. If not walk away. Its sketchy enough that I would pass.

Any time I wanted a bit of extra security in a transaction, I make a simple request of the seller:

Write MY forum screen name and today’s date on a sheet of paper and take a picture of it with the item for sale.
That proves your seller actually possesses the item they’re selling.
I’ve never had a seller deny this request.

They contacted me as well mentioning the same person. The low caliber lead me to believe it was a scammer.

Got a message from jaycity about a rifle I’ve been looking for. I already found one so it didn’t go any farther then the message

He hit me up, too ! Same guy. He sent me a DM saying some guy had the .308 AMax bullets I put a WTB post up for. I sent him a reply simply asking how he knew this guy. Now the entire conversation has been deleted.

Ban him.

Yeah , this guy was banned out and reported to anti-scam/services around 11am 'ish due to reports.

We've had a sticky thread going for a few years now on this exact scam method.

NYGF - Possible scammers in PMs: Very low risk alert, but be aware and let us know.

This really isn't a huge deal, but since we've uncovered 3 instances of these so far I feel it's prudent to make members at least aware it's a thing. Also, I ask any members who see this to alert the staff ASAP so we can quickly rid ourselves of these most noble of Nigerian princes.. heh This...

It's always the same basic thing, just filling in the blank with whatever your WTB thread in the classifieds is..

The best thing to do is just use the report function. Please do that. You're helping out the site and other members when you do. You don't even need to explain anything, we'll get it. (Though simply copy/pasting the PM you received into the report is even more helpful) The report function (shown/available on every post/message) is always the best way, because this is alerted to all site staff and so the first person available can handle it (and with something like this we want to get the scammer locked out as quickly as possible).

It would be a bigger problem here too if I weren't kind of an obsessive nut about manually reviewing every sign up in great detail. There is method to my madness though. These kind of people try to get in every single day. The account of this scammer already had a 'warning note' I placed on it at account approval, and more often than not that's the case. As I say about a different one in the main thread on this though, "This one I already found suspicious and was kind of waiting for it.. but if I prematurely banned everyone I found a little suspicious not a lot of new users would get through." Most of them don't ever make it on to the site of course, but even with my anal-retentiv..er.. I mean meticulous nature, it's going to happen occasionally.. though very rarely.

I know some new members really dislike having to wait for manual approval. I get it, they probably often sign up in the moment because that's when they have something they want to say. It probably winds up annoying and turning away some amount of new people, and that really stinks. On the other hand though, nobody can deny that it keeps the site SO much better for the general membership... and I'd like to think that our little 'family' (dysfunctional as we are) here can appreciate my obsession with their security in general..heh.
