I recently disassembled my press for a 100% deep dive cleaning. Then came the reassembly. Since I don't do this very often when I do, I search through the interweb for the technique. So, I thought I would start a thread for reloaders to create a quick reference guide for your press. This one is for a Lee Pro 1000.
The bold italicized parts I never remember. (How much to turn the die for the final set up)
This is for the 3 die set which has a Depriming/Sizing Die - Primer Seating - Powder and Flare Die - Bullet Seating/crimp die.
DePrimer - Sizing Die
Raise ram to top.
Insert the die. Raise the ram until you feel the dye come to a stop.
Lower the ram and Turn 1/4 turn inward
Raise ram and tighten the die.
Powder/Flare die
Raise ram to top
Lower the until it touches the die.
Turn die back one full turn to the minimum flare position
Bullet setting die
Put a cartridge in Shell plate
Raise to the top
Turn the die into the turret until it stops, touching the case. finger tighten the lock ring.
Lower shell plate and put a bullet in the case.
RAise bullet and turn adjustment until its resistance is felt
Raise the die to seat bullet and turn in 1 full turn. Check the depth and turn the adjustment. Each turn is 55 thousandths of an inch.
Turn until the proper depth is obtained.
Lower cartridge and turn in the die by 1 half turn to set minimum crimp.
Done!

And what I noticed about his shots sometimes open up a lot. Now I know he can shoot. and I know he uses pretty good stuff for reloading, But I think his bullet seating may be off a little bit ,His deviations can sometimes run as high as 20 or more. just my guess, doesn't seem to be shooter error, materials, or tools, I think it may be a loading error somewhere. Ive watched guys that can shoot bug holes , but they pay a lot of attention to the seating depth . the variations in SD'd they cronied are as a small as 2! Thats some solid consistency right there.
