Predator hunting advice?

I definitely want to try and do some Yote gaming this year. Since I have never been, can you use an AR or are you limited to hunting rifles?

I'm not quite sure if my SCR falls into an AR category since it's technically not an AR since I can own it in NYC despite their stupid administrative codes which prevents me from owning an actual AR.

For observation equipment, I have a NVM-14 gen 2 and AGM thermal.

I got a helmet mount for both my NVG and thermal. The thermal just for static observation.

Having the AGM thermal helmet mounted makes life so much easier. Now I won't have to pull it out of a pouch every time or at the risk of having it dangle on a lanyard. You just have to flip it down when you need it, and back up when not.

You can use an AR or any semi auto for predator hunting. Yor are still limited to the 5 rounds even for coyote hunting. Make sure you use something in the mag so you can't load more that 5 rounds. I use a -5 floor plate limiter in my AR when hunting predators and also in an AR 10 when hunting deer. If you come across a DEC agent, he will definately make sure the mag can not take more than 5 rounds. Where I hunt in Livingston Manor at a friends place, We are up on a hill overlooking a field. He sets up a little box that makes wounded small game sounds and has a fake fur tail that waves around. We usually hunt coyotes mid morning or later in the afternoon when its light out.

SCR worked for me.
My upper is chambered in 35 Gunner, but .223/556 will drop them no problem.
Your set up for navigating and spotting, so If the funds are available I recommend getting a dedicated thermal scope for the rifle.

the scope on this has a lighted recital and then i added a Green led light to it ..

it worked out nice ..

standing out in the middle of a farm field at midnight waiting for a yote with a bolt gun ..

you have to try it .. LOL

Another thing that will help you,,, use bait piles. Dead anything, cows, pigs, deers, chickens etc etc

The best Predator hunting advice is to camo yourself with river mud. The Predator can't detect you then.

I believe you wasted your money on that mono. The sensor resolution is to low, way to low for any kind of identification.
Im going to say max 50yds you might know its a dog and not a deer and 50yds might be pushing it.
Please dont be upset with what Im saying because Ive wasted money on thermals. Shoots100 helped me quite a bit over the last couple of years.

The good thing about what you purchased is that you went with thermal instead of Night Vision. Which is always a huge positive when purchasing a scanner. You will find more critters, even if they are only heat blobs with that sensor.

Dont ever buy a thermal less than 384 and preferably a 384x12um, instead of a 17um which is the pixel size

When choosing a scope and you want to stay on the cheaper side,,, go with night vision. Spot your kill with the thermal and get on it with the night vision.

I wouldnt go with that AGM Rattler 256 either. Sensor is to low.

Remember the guy Keith you sold your Vortex to? Well he has a Rattler TS35-384 that he might be willing to sell after he gets sick of me trying to push him into buying a 640.

If you can afford it,,, the cheapest best thermal out there right now is the AGM Adder TS35-384. It has a good starting magnification. Good battery life and a decent sensor. AGM Adder TS35-384 3x-24x Thermal Rifle Scope

Its better than the Rattlers

An excellent cheap mono is the AGM Taipan TM15-384,,, which I owned before buying a different mono because I wanted a 640. Any of the Taipan 384's are excellent mono's

No you cant rifle mount the mono you have and you dont want to be scanning with anything that you have to quickly mount to your gun. Plus you dont want to scan with a scope that is mounted to your gun,,,, huge pain in the ass

One thing you should be aware of. Your starting magnification will always be your best clarity when viewing. As soon as you up the magnification, which is done digitally, you cut your sensor in half. So your 384 sensor would now have the clarity of a 192 by just adjusting the magnification.
This will be whether its a scope or a mono

I will only add that selection of scope and technology would depend on where you hunt. Very little public land are fields in NY so while AGM 25's 35's are great, they're for wide open spaces. I hunt some private and public areas most of it NY woods but some fields less than 200 yards. A monocular like the AGM 15-384 wide its wider FOV, good resolution would be the great choice for scanning what I described above. In the woods I use red light low intensity as the shots are barely 40 yards and the eyes pop with red light. The monocular works well in the woods as I don't have to focus and the FOV is about as good as it gets. If I get access to fields then I'll have a set up that. BTW, you can kill coyotes in broad day light. Keep that to yourself. lol
