Forgive the thread hijack and all your impressions of Bushie, but coincidentally enough I just got back from a funeral in Rochester for another WW2 Navy vet. Who, coincidentally enough also flew an Avenger Torpedo Bomber in the Pacific. Cool stories heard and I got to see his flight log which his family still had. "Attacked Okinawa" over and over again in the log. Impressive considering g what I was doing in my mid twenties compared to what he was.
Anyway... and I'm guessing somewhere there is a count, but I wonder how many WW2 vets are still alive. It would be a shame to have the last one pass and not have us notice.
Assuming you joined in 1945 at the latest and at age 18, you would have to be 91 unless you lied about your age.

I applaud George Bush Senior's service in the military.
I also applaud him for saving us from the possible Presidency of Michael Dukakis !

I've been thinking about this a bit lately. I think the last WWII vet I was friends with died earlier this year. Most of them would never say a word about their service, but occasionally someone else would pass along a story about one of them.
One of the guys I knew was a POW in Germany during the war and was forced to work in a coal mine. He mentioned it once in the 20 or so years i knew him, and only in passing. One of the other WWII vets I was friends with told me about some of the stuff the guy went through - then started laughing about how the other vets at the VFW would bust his balls about conspiring with the enemy. They were funny guys.

My grandfather served. He's 94. He's the last known pilot alive that flew the hellcat. He never got to experience that fighter in combat. Those planes were introduced just before the bombs were dropped, forcing Japan's surrender.
He's not doing so well these days. He's been battling cancer for almost a year. I've been trying to get things done and squared away so I can make the trip to visit him before it's to late.
