Ok, my earlier point was it seems they identified him by name using an illegal gun registry. Unless they knew him before he got on the roof, and are throwing an illegal database out there to distract.
That "Bound Book" is not recorded in it's entirety unless and until the Licensee surrenders the Licenses, then an ATF Agent comes and collects the Licenses, Bound Books, and 4473's, from there they go to West Virginia and are scanned into their Data Base (but that's not "registration") the only other time those records are examined are during an audit/investigation/spot-check...they don't just come in and start making copies of everything, especially for a Registration, which is prohibited by Federal Law.
Lawfully manufactured and transferred guns ARE tracked at every point, UNTIL the end purchaser and if that end person disposes of it (sell/trade/give away/...) there's a good chance that the end of knowing who owns it...falls off the Radar so to say.
I am saying the bound book system *itself* is a database.
It does seem quite suspicious that the serial number of the gun was the fastest way for them to put a name to the corpse.

Not that it scares me, it angers me that it's supposed to be prohibited by law if they have it anyway. And I'm under No Illusion that we have any privacy at all anymore. Whether it's easy pass or random cameras that the government has all over the place, along with facial recognition software already being implemented in this country, privacy from the government is dead now that we are in the technology age.
Law enforcement in general has an attitude that since they're the ones who decide what laws get enforced and against whom, that they can ignore any of them that they find too inconvenient.
