Add to it there are some people voluntarily submitting to their vehicle use being tracked and recorded by their insurance carriers for better rates, lol. A major mistake mind you.

Let's complicate it further, by the newest vehicles with "smart" capability being subject to user agreement and the vehicle owners not owning the information collected by the technology provider! This also could be compromised and the source of legal issues...

So if you're suspected of let's say an excessive speeding violation, they could then take your ECM and dump the data? And I'm not sure how long it keeps data, but do know it's does preserve at least the last drive, and also when airbags and suck are deployed.

So it's interesting to say the least...

Anyways, thought I might have to wire a kill switch (OBDII 3-Way, wired dead short data to 12v power) just in case... Hahahaha

I wouldn't hold your breath. Because those "black boxes" were basically designed and mandated by the federal gov't, they are about as effective as the "spill free" gas cans that dump gasoline everywhere. They record very little (if any) useful information to LE other than speed, if brakes were applied or not, and what seat belts were buckled. They might have approximate occupant weights too for the front seats but that's about it.

I'm surprised they're even bothering. I work at an auto repair facility that also does towing and we have had many MV fatalities over the years. Of those that were fatal, only a handful ever resulted in a black box audit. I know of only one scenario where that data led to any charges being filed. Again, they just don't record much useful data that investigators don't already have from their accident scene recreation.

Fuckin’ joke’s on them. The first thing I did the day I brought my new truck home was unplug the stupid seatbelt sensors. Now the computer thinks the seatbelts are always buckled.
I don’t know about other manufacturers, but on Chevrolet trucks it’s very simple - there’s a small, 2-wire plug on the buckle itself, just under the seat. Unplug it and, viola, no more annoying seatbelt chime.

I do wear my seatbelt while driving, but going across a hayfield in the summer time or an old dirt road during deer season, not so much.
No matter what, I never need to hear the stupid chime telling me that the seatbelt isn’t buckled.

I dont see a problem with telemetric data and black boxes as soon as the user can agree or deny collection of data.
A video, photo or piexe of data can help exonerate someone from an alledged violation or crime.
Also as owner of the vehicle you reserve the right to avoid it, uninstall it or destroy it at any time.
The problem could be data that is collected w/o your consent than in many places is a crime. ... Yet several agencies and organizations do it all the time. Lawyers and hackers love this stuff.

And they are not going to need the computer to tell them if your seatbelts were buckled after an accident.

Smart doorbell. Spy doorbell.
Smart speaker. Spy speaker.
Smart thermostat. Spy thermostat.

Do that and you'll know what the device really is.

Not that i drive like that, but having your own camera used against you is the main reason i havent started using one yet.

My wife was involved in a fatal MVA accident, They had zero suspicion that she had done anything wrong but treated her like a criminal, even with glaring scene evidence that she was in no way at fault. At the hospital I overheard a conversation of the SP investigator talking to the DA on the phone. The DA wanted a blood draw, her phone and the data recorder from her vehicle and would obtain a warrant for each if it was not given voluntary.
