Problem Casting My Chamber Looking for Some Advice.

My father has a rifle and we don't know what caliber it is. So, I tried to cast the chamber with casting alloy. I can't get the casting out of the chamber. I used an old aluminum cleaning rod to try and remove the alloy but it won't budge. I even tried to hammer it out with a light weight hammer and the ally still won't come out. Any suggestions?

Did you use Cerrosafe? If so it should met out with a heat gun or soldering gun. Maybe you had your plug too far down the bore and your casting has engaged the rifling.

i was going to say also "Cerrosafe" just warm up the chamber and melt it back out and try again ..

The chamber didn't look nasty to me. I looked down it from both ends and it looked fine before I cast it. If I melt it out, How do I do that without the metal leaking down the barrel and into the chamber?

Take the action out of the stock. Hold it vertically with the barrel pointed up. Then heat up the chamber until the casting alloy comes out

Casting alloy shows a melting point below 200 degrees.

If you're worried a about overheating it, you could melt it out in a water or oil bath.

Once removed from the stock you could just hold it by the barrel and put the chamber in a pot of boiling water for a few mins.

Then just oil it up again.


I wonder if the problem with not being able to remove the casting is a lack of a release agent ?

With Cerrosafe the casting solidifies to a slightly smaller size, then expands to the size of the mold as it stabilizes.

I could see sticking problems happening if it isn't removed right away.

Due to the metals involved and the temperatures, there shouldn't be any "sticking" like with solder. A mechanical lock with a grove, burr, or pitting could be problematic.

Don’t sound like there should be any overheating issues for the barrel at those melting points.
Especially on the chamber side.

I'd be curious as to how you cast it in the first place. When you get the current casting out... all you have to do is take a cleaning rod with a copper brush on the end and slide it down the barrel from the muzzle toward the chamber. The copper brush should have a cleaning patch at the end. That will make it "airtight". You should see the cleaning pad about a half inch before the neck of the casing. That will get you enough rifling to measure the lands and grooves. Melt the cerrosafe in something like a ice cream scoop. It can be done with a torch on very low setting. Cerrosafe is like solder and melts with very little heat. Carefully pour it down the chamber is a quick but controlled manner. It only takes about 30 seconds to solidify. You can then push the rod further towards the chamber and it should come right out. It will tear off the patch leaving a little bit of fuzzies on the end of the rifling section.

ETA there is no need to use oil or anything like that

After you get that casting out make sure the chamber is clean as in sparkling clean the try again.

I many times, will take a lead bullet, coat it with valve grinding compound, and pound it down a dark bore..I start at the muzzle, tapping it down with a brass hammer, and then a 1/4"/4"brass drift, and then a 2' ,1/4" steel rod...........I repeat 20 times................shinny bore.

USE ENOUGH FORCE................. EVEN IF YOU USED LEAD.

Linotype? Heat with propane torch, and wack it from muzzle end..don't hit muzzle.
