Pump shotgun consistently double-feeding

Before I knew much about firearms in 2012, I bought a Weatherby PA-459 pump shotgun. It is made in Turkey and imported/branded by Weatherby:



In early 2013, I fired maybe 30 rounds. I then put the shotgun away until this past weekend when I took it out and cleaned it prior to taking it to a shotgun course. When testing the gun's cycling with dummy rounds, I found that it now consistently double-feeds from the magazine.

When I load the magazine and then rack the forearm back, two shells enter the loading port (one rises to the level of the chamber with another below it). This jams the gun since the forearm cannot be moved forward because of the lower shell being pushed towards the magazine.

I've tried several types of shells. Some work better than others. But, all eventually cause double-feeding. This was very annoying to deal with at the course.

I'm going to contact Weatherby so that I can send the gun in for a repair. In the interim, does anybody have any recommendations as to what I could check to possibly fix the problem on my own?

Get a mossberg or rem

For shotguns, I dont like cheaping out or using other. Maverick line is hit or miss. Ive had several 500s, one 590 and shot several 870s with no issue.

As for your problem, Im not sure. Could be a spring problem

That was my thought. I think that something is wrong with the shell interrupter (which they call a "feed latch").

As for your purchase recommendations: I agree. Like I said, I was new and inexperienced when I bought this one (which was over $450 at the time). I've got a Mossberg 500 20 gauge as a backup.

I remember something about mavericks needed to bend something. Not much help, but Im getting old.

I'm thinking it could be a sticky shell stop since sometimes a shell being loaded will seem to be secured in the magazine, but will jump into the receiver when I remove thumb pressure on the back of the shell.

By any chance have you tried with regular rounds and see if issues continue ?

Yes. I've tried cycling: Snap caps, target shells, buckshot shells, and slug shells. All had the same problems.

I have the USSG version of that Shotgun and have found it to be anything but reliable. My problems involve in failure to eject fully the spent shell. I've had a few double feeds but not like what you describe. When money allows, it will be replaced with a Mossberg.

Agreed.

Once I get it fixed, I'll sell it. I cannot sell a defective firearm.

When the elevator screws on my lever guns are loose I get double feeds. Check all the little screws to make sure they're snugged.

Thanks. I've checked everything that I can see w/o completely disassembling the receiver. Things seem tight. There appears to be normal motion of the shell stop and the shell interrupter (which Weatherby calls the "feed latch").

One of the parts must have become malformed and defective. I'm betting on the head of the shell stop.

Sell it on gunbroker and buy a known working model.

Paint it in digital camo and stencil ''JAMBO'' on the stock...you'll get top dollar !! LOL

I have 500 and 870, both good and relable, you'l be happy w/ either I think. PERSONALLY, I give a slight edge in favorability to the Mossberg for the position of the slide release, I don't have to take either hand off the ready position to be ready to go.

I'll take it to my FFL and ask him to make it go away and take his commission. If I can get back 70% of the purchase price, I'll be fine.

That's what I did with my XDS. Masterclass in Monroe by the Woodbury Commons took 20 percent from the sale of my XDS if I remember correctly.

Yup......I left mine w/ factory stock I should have mentioned that in first post, but did turn an 870 into the Magpul model (had 870 before the 500) I like that and gets some double takes when I put the 24'' bbl on it and go trap shooting !! Got a 24 out of 25 w/ it last year, LOL !! I can adjust the cheek and LOP in a few seconds. and it is also hell on crows too.

I just bought a police trade in 870 police magnum. It's a newer one and appears to have been shot very little. I like it very much. Has express sites. That or a 590a1 are about the best pump guns in my opinion. You should be good with either of them if you are looking to get a new shotgun.

Good product if and when available if you have a little DYI skills you can probably weld a piece of metal to original part

I don't have the skills or the time for your DIY proposal. So, I ordered the "long arm" version of their extended slide release.

Shoten Armory appears to be a New York business.

Exactly why I put a standard stock back on my 500. That and the fact I shoot better with the standard stock than the pistol grip.
