GOUVERNEUR — State police on Monday charged Christopher J. Raven, 48, of 671 California Road, with felony third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Troopers charge at 8 a.m. on Jan. 31, at his residence, Mr. Raven was found to be in possession of an assault-style rifle which was not complaint with state law and had the following features: a detachable magazine, a pistol grip, collapsible stock and a flash compressor.

Mr. Raven was arraigned in Fowler Town Court and released.

There's a member on here who's brother had a pure Unsafe Act arrest for a Ruger 10/22 with a thumbhole stock despite the Sheriff's and DA's saying that they are against the Unsafe Act.

Is there a link to a public thread or is this just another anecdote?

Back in 2016 there was an article that said "only 31 people have been charged with possessing an unregistered assault weapon, according to the state data. Eight have been charged with failing to register, a separate charge that took effect in April 2013." And these were overwhelmingly downstate. I haven't seen anything more recently.

In free-r states gun owners stick up for each other. What's going on that someone complained about this guy to the state police? Did they tip them off about the gun or was it unrelated? In any event, this is clearly a rare event for a real upstate county to arrest someone on a pure cosmetic assault weapon charge. We need to find out more and raise a stink especially if the gun had nothing to do with any criminal activity--he wasn't charged with any.

My friend's neighbor in CT had his wife call the police because he flipped out and starting breaking things after he found out that his wife was buying weed for his teenage daughter. It wasn't even her daughter. Then when they arrived and was talking to him outside she opened the safe for the other cops inside.

I believe this. Women are the devil. This is why it's not good enough to just keep your nose clean and not invite the cops in. Satan is conspiring with our evil society to turn families against themselves. It's all good until it isn't and then when it goes to shit it goes bad. And if you're a man, much less a man with a gun, you are automatically the evil one. My condolences for your friend's neighbor.

Not being a nay-sayer, but I couldn't find anything on it... I do wonder though how anyone puts themselves in a position to get caught possessing an illegal or modified rifle to begin with, or make modifications that can take away your freedom for life. I am all for making my guns my own, but would never go the extra mile to risk it. I feel comfortable that my firearms are capable enough to do the job w/o taking that extra step.
Let's face it, the subject at hand (thumb-hole stock) isn't going to give you any advantages that I am aware of.

He was charged for an assault rifle with "a detachable magazine, a pistol grip, collapsible stock and a flash compressor [sic]". In other words a standard AR15. It's nearly impossible to find an AR15 upper or barrel that doesn't have a threaded barrel or muzzle device on it. You have to either destroy it or have one custom built. Same for the pistol grip. It's not like he was going out of his way to have a noncompliant rifle, you have to go out of your way to make an AR15 compliant. As for who complained to the police and why, and whether that relates to the rifle they found, that is unknown.

And this is in St. Lawrence county, which ought to be a sanctuary for law-abiding gun-owners. Where are the other charges?

I don't wonder at all. The law's are so stupid, convoluted, vague (intentionally so), and unconstitutional that I'm sure there are hundreds, if not thousands of people in this state that don't understand just which thing puts one over the line and into a felon status. Even as I sit here and type this I am still at a loss when I think I can't have a typical modern sporting rifle, what I must do to make it legally acceptable and how these bullshit laws affect anyone other than the people they ultimately want to take all guns away from, the average citizen. FUAC!
