Question about being a reference.

So i asked a co worker to be a reference for me for my pistol permit. Do any of you guys have an issue with being a reference for someone for anything.
Fairly typical co worker type relationship. Not really going out for drinks after work or anything like that. Nothing negative.
He seemed to take the request as if he was putting his name on the line for me to get a pistol permit. I just dont see it like this and personally would never say no to such a request if i knew of nothing negative about the person. Just wanted some opinions cause maybe I'm taking the whole thing way too lightly.
He's not a gun guy is that changes your opinion.

When i did my Westchester permit years ago. My references were not even contacted.

Yeah has to be in county. I'm from Suffolk.Thats the problem ive been having most of the people I go to school with are from Nassau and most of the people I work with are from queens.
Doesnt help one of my original choices for a reference refuses to put his birthday down. Gonna talk to him tomorrow about it.

I can see asking a non gun guy having a problem. They have demonized gun ownership so much in this state they don't know what they are signing for. I was a reference for a coworker that I barley knew, much like what you laid out above. No out of work association at all, but he's a big hunter and knew I was an avid second amendment person. Because of that he asked me to sign for him and I told him more guns the safe we all are. He was quiet amazed by the response, I think he's pretty FUDD'ish.

Prior to my current job, I was always honored if someone ask me to be their Permit reference.

Oddly enough one of my references is a early 20s year old girl. Probably the largest non gun demographic and she was right on it and barely asked a question past what she had to do.

Today most "moderates" are so brainwashed that they think anyone outside of LE who wants to have a handgun (or any gun) must be a psychopath. Also, NY just doesn't have the gun culture of many other states. When I applied for mine two neighbors and a fairly distant cousin acted as a reference for me. One of my first references never submitted the paperwork so I had to go to a Plan B. Kind of pissed me off too since I always thought he was a good and we had a good relationship, so either he legitimately "forgot" the paperwork (several times I might add) or he didn't really like guns or thought that I shouldn't have a handgun for some reason (he always seemed like a pretty conservative, right-of-center guy based on our conversations too so I don't know why he would've thought that way).

Moral of the story, for me at least, based on my experience getting my permit and the PIA it was with the references if anyone asks me to be a reference for them (and they're not clearly a degenerate) I will gladly act as their reference. This hasn't happened to me thus far but if the day comes I will fill out and return the paperwork promptly and with joy to see someone else exercising their 2nd Amendment rights.

Not sure where you are located, but when I filed for my permit, my references weren’t contacted. I guess it was more of test to see if you could get 4 people to agree you should own a gun.

That's pretty much what I'm assuming at this point. Most people I've talked to said none of their references were called.

There are some who are just not gun friendly, but want to be part of the team while not showing it.
If he were a real friend, he should just politely say "I cant do it for whatever ", rather than say yes ,and just hold up your process.

He was pretty good about it. He told me up front that he didn't feel comfortable doing it. I guess being a gun person that response sort of baffled me because like many here I would do it in a heartbeat for anyone who's asked as long as I didn't know of any illegal activity on their part.

Don't read into it. They're NOT friends. All they are are cordial work associates.

Do you go to any ranges out there in Nassau Cty? If not maybe you should. Start forging some friendships with some like-minded people.

Yeah I'm out and about around here. Maybe I'll ask someone I've met around here. Hadn't actually considered it before.

Maybe not a friend, however still someone that you see everyday, and have still developed a sort of relationship with. If he was that uncomfortable about it, he should have just said, sorry I cant, or would rather not, because of.......
At least you could have moved on and not have created an un-easy environment for both of you.

They give you an affidavit to have your reference sign. Like it was mentioned earlier, few references are ever contacted, itsmainly to show you can get 4 people to sign a paper saying they're comfortable with you having a gun.

The Westchester application requests references from the same county, but believe people were able to use out of county references when they challenged the request. That’s actually held back of a lot of people, but seems it shouldn’t have.

In this county you can even use your family.

I hand out my reference approval signature like it's going out of style.

Here they are very strict about using family from what I'm told. Not gonna be the one to push the limits for no good reason.
