I found references tough as well even though I lived in my city all my life and I was 35 before I applied. Do you know any cops or firemen? Also be assured there are more progun people than you realize. Start talking to people and you'll flush them out.

3 out of my 4 references in Suffolk County were not into guns, or knew anything about them, the fourth one is a noob that owns a shotgun but hasn't put many shells thorough it. I was just straight up and honest that I was applying for a pistol license and they signed it without hesitation, I've known them for years and developed trust, if they are willing to vouch for you for other things like job references, and they see you as a responsible individual they will vouch for you despite what personal opinions they might have over civilian gun ownership and the second amendment.
Reminder: The Suffolk County Police Department keeps violating state law which states that a pistol license will be granted or denied within 6 months of presentation of application. They argue that the 6 month clock doesn't begin until you get finger printed and submit the State Police application, NOT the SCPD "Questionnaire". It took me 10 months to finally get a fingerprinting appointment. If anyone wants to challenge them in court I am willing to join as a co-plaintiff, but with the anti-gun activist judges that we have here I don't want to give any false promises and bring more bad precedent. I am aware that Suffolk County is just one of many NY jurisdictions with this issue.
