Question about nonresident visiting family in NY state

Howdy,

I will be traveling via truck with my wife from North Texas to Otego to see some family over Christmas. I understand that bringing a handgun into NY is a no go. I wanted to know if this extends to NY legal long guns. I lived in PA for a year and I did bring a shotgun with me to Otego but this was awhile ago and not sure if the laws have changed

I am planning on bringing a Mossberg 535, Remington 1100 and a Mauser. Couldnt really find this online as most sites focused on the handgun part. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Which I find outrageously stupid. My in laws will be here for Thanksgiving and my father in law is not allowed to shoot guns... that he freakin' gave me.

Alright yep. No one up there even owns a pistol as far as I know. They are all farmers so its mostly rifles or shotguns as far as I know. I didnt want to bring my mauser if I was going to run into any issues with the police. My uncle states that most police / sheriffs up there are 2A friendly just stay away from the cities

It all depends... And it only takes 1 officer having a bad day or wanting to be a hardass and they can ruin you. But yes, generally speaking NY state is not exactly equal in its gun law enforcement. You stand a fair chance at a town cop/sheriff deputy looking the other way in rural areas, but if your run in is with state troopers or city cops and your sceewed. They are not as likely to look the other way.

The guns you described (mauser, mossberg, winchester) are fine to bring in. As you said keep them locked up and empty with ammo in a separate area while in your vehicle.

If you consider bring anything semi automatic then check back and we will go through the ridiculous process of explaining our shitty and not well thought out laws.


Sorry.... NYC/downstate politicians and essentially 1 party rule has ruined this otherwise beautiful stste and destroyed all common sense and reasoning.

Your Remington 1100 needs to have tube capacity of 7 or less and no "evil features" such as folding or thumb hole stock (although these would be permitted if tube capacity is 5 or less). Believe Rem 1100 tactical is no go in NY (9 +1 capacity).
