Rail on a scope mount

When I introduced myself on the Forum I mentioned I was fairly new to guns so please excuse me if my question is off the wall. Is there any way to mount a picatinny rail on a milsurp bolt action rifle? If the rifle has been sporterized and is drilled and tapped for a scope will the mounting holes on the rail line up with the already drilled holes? Any suggestions even sarcastic ones will be appreciated.Thanks

Yes it's called a scope base. We will need the make and model of the rifle to point you in the right direction. The hard part is every rifle make and model has a different mounting pattern and profile.

Depending on what your Surplus gun is, there are many options. For Mausers and 03 Springfields there are even 'non-invasive mounts available that require ZERO, NONE, NADA modification too the gun itself, so it will maintain its value as a relic.

Unless it is a specific scope base for that pattern rifle and it was drill and tapped for that specific base and design most likely will not line up.

Mek, here is one for a mauser. Is it ideal(?), no, but it allows one to test the full potential of a fine old surplus rifle without altering its historical integrity.

Not any rail will do, but you can certainly get one that will.

There is no standard for this and there are 1M ways this could be done to any military surplus rifle so how do we know
w/o knowing where it was tapped, how it was tapped, and overall dimensions?

Also something that is drilled and tapped, if done properly doesn't have to alter the receiver, as those holes could be
covered back with shallow screws but it seems the whole thing has been already sporterized so there is no concern
about the original classic.

That's why I said he can get a rail that will work. Even if he needs to buy a blank piece of rail and drill it to match holes in the receiver (or have someone do it for him).

I don't think he was looking for a "go here and buy this" answer, more like a "is this possible" answer. The answer to that is "yes".

They sell a lot of garbage that is expensive and it doesn't work.
In order to do it right, one must drill and tap it for a Mauser steel base.
Midway sells them. They also sell the jig for making the job easier...

Thanks all for your comments. My question was a hypothetical one. I just wanted to know would it be feasible to screw on a picatinny rail using the existing holes in the forward section of a receiver which had been drilled for the base of scope rings. From what I am hearing it seems it's possible if the holes line up and their diameters match. I am looking at a short barreled Moroccan Mauser in 30 06 but would only consider buying it if I could have better sights. I have shot a "tanker" Garand with a rail replacing the handguard and it had a SeeAll sight. That set up made a big difference in my shooting.

What you want is a very popular practice in Europe, Africa, Australia, NZ, etc..
Drill and tap for the specific mount ideally made of one piece steel for added rigidity. Bed it too just line a Model 70 or any other bolt action.
I would imagine after that you want an aftermarket stock some with nice drop box and even detachable magazines.
They make excellent rifles specially re-barreled with match barrels.

someone drilled like 4 holed right into the chamber and tapped for a mount .. right over the brass section of the chamber ..
I looked at him and said it a wall decoration now .. I'll see if he can bring it down again and I'll get some photos ..

You mean he drilled trough both the receiver and barrel all the way into the chamber?

so one screw on the receiver and the other on the barrel? He had to go over 1/2" throght the
reeciver and shank!
I wonder how he was intending to compensate for the difference in level between the receiver and the actual barrel.

Still you can tell him it doesn't have to become a wall hunger. It is easy to fix. Or even better, take advantage
and re chamber using a match barrel in the original or other favorite calibers.

Make a picture. It might win the year's Buba's kitchen gunsmithing award! lol

both should be on the receiver. It is ok to go through and then the other might touch the tenon threads but the
screws might be the right length otherwise the one over the bolt lug area will protrude and not allow the bolt to rotate into battery.

The fiasco can be fixed but I would actually re-barrel and get a nice chamber job. They are not that expensive.
Probably send it to a gunsmith and ask him to install a nice base for him. LOL!
