I stopped by the Nassau County Rifle & Pistol Range today in Uniondale. I was hoping to do some shooting with the Marlin 1936 that I picked up at the Hessney Gun Auction last month. No luck with that today though, since I did not want to wait for a point. The lady behind the counter told me there would be a 35 minute wait.
I don't like waiting for two reasons. First of all is the waste of time. Secondly and more importantly is the dunderhead factor that almost always seems to accompany a long wait at the range. It simply amazes me the stupid things I have heard people talking about while waiting. I guess that can be a bit of a good thing because if I wind up on one of the ranges and the guy making stupid statements about shooting is in the same range with me, I keep an eye on him. Of course there are also the ones you were not tipped off about by their stupidity in the waiting area. Those are the ones who get into the range on one of the five points in the same room with you and then start doing really unsafe things while in there like: uncasing guns behind the firing line, covering other people in the range area, cross shooting at targets that are not their own, covering other people on the range, casing guns behind the line, covering other people on the same range, shooting through the partition between points, covering other people on the same range, sweeping up brass between your feet as you are shooting, covering other folks on the same range, walking over to your point and striking up a conversation as you are concentrating on shooting, covering other folks on the same range, shooting the glass at the back of the range, covering other people on the same range... It seems to me that the more folks who are at the range, the more likely it is you will encounter a dunderhead like that and it stands to reason the wait list is due to more folks being at the range on any given day. Nope, I do not like waiting for a point at the range on really busy days.
I did wind up meeting someone near the range to do an ammo deal, so my trip there was not a total waste of my time. Maybe I will stop by there again tomorrow and try to take a few shots with the Marlin 1936.
