Re-cert

I re certified 5 years ago. (handgun permit) Did anyone not ? And if not, any consequences? Also with the new crap act coming, My recert is due in December of this year but may re cert to avoid, for a while, the range stipulation.

Any input...2 cents on this subject ?

I was not due to re-cert til 01/17/2023, I did my online re-cert on 7/14/2022 next re-cert is 07/14/2027. The way I read the law is if you wait till after 09/01/2022 you will need to re-cert in 2025. I also didn't want to wait till the end of this month as the system could get overloaded and crash or the State could shut it down for a software update.

I’d recertify before 9/1/22. You will have 11 months to do it thereafter with the new and improved training and then on a three year schedule going forward.
If you don’t you no longer have a pistol permit and the county will settle up with you.

They haven’t come up with the training requirements yet. Until then, you submit your paperwork. If the application for renewal is in but not denied, your old permit is still active.
Sources are saying prior police training , armed security training will meet the training requirement. And if you passed basic training firearms training in the military, you are exempt from the requirement.

I know a guy who knows a guy who is a cop that says that if there is a relatively full moon and you recertify the night before September 1st at 11:59pm, your permit will go into purgatory filing, where it can never expire in NYS;
Otherwise you'll probably end up needing to recertify like everyone else within 3 years of the effective date the law goes into effect, regardless when your last date was due.

The new proposed law and the old recert system is like playing chicken. Do now for 5 or wait and see what the Courts say and or recert every 3 with a live fire course. It's all BS...as a side not similar...Boating driver training certificates was enacted for new boat owners...fee of course...but a certain age group is exempt...but not after Jan 1 2025 as ALL will need a safe boating certificate. $$$$$$$$$

Thank you for this. Admittedly I've been off forums and out of touch for quite some time and was unaware of the upcoming changes to the law. Just submitted for recertification even though I wasn't due until December.

I submitted a recertification request on 7/27/22. I just checked the status and it says my next recertification is due on 7/27/2027. Hopefully by that time this new law will be struck down or I will no longer be a NY resident.

That 2027 date is pointless. My permit still shows no date, blank, where it says 'Expiration'. Yet I still have to recertify if I don't want it to lapse and expire.

September 1st we'll see what the new edict is.

I am pretty certain that as of Sept. 1st the 5 years turns into 3 years. I would just rather get in before the SHTF and who knows what this winds up being like.

The feedback I got from a member of the Assembly and a member from the State Senate both indicated the same. They both voted against the bill, with prejudice.

Of course, the new laws are not in effect until AFTER September. Unless the bills that kick in next month are overturned your 2027 date is temporary.

Same here, gonna be outta here so don't give much shits about whatever they're doing! It's a mess, as usual and will remain so! They DON'T WANT anyone knowing what to do, or how to do it. Changing the permit system to 3 years in September absent notification to those being permitted to carry is absolutely ridiculous, but that's what they'll do. Somehow say it's YOUR responsibility to KNOW.

I guess, if nothing is done about it...on Sept 1 we'll see what the cert date is...changed or not. Actually, with the new "law", a carry permit is only good on your own property now. I understand that no one knows if a person is carrying...BUT...if in a building and something happens that all are detained...a person carrying in a "no gun" building or property could have trouble.
