Re-decking

Been working on deck project for another awesome NYGF member past week.

Pulled off all the old decking (most of the work had already been done before I showed up lol)



Added some joists where butt joints on new decking landed and on sides where boarder will be and have been re-decking with Timbertech (Trex knock off) past couple of days. Also added metal connectors on the front rim joist. Old framing is slightly out of square and a little wavy but structurally sound. Still have a day or two left but coming out nice.



The dark brown was HOT today in sun lol...

Looks great. Can I ask a dumb question (having not worked decking previously)? Why start on the outside and work in, I would think in to out would be easier?

I'm guessing because you square everything from the footings rather than the house?

Main reason is deck is not perfectly square and I wanted to be sure the last (two) rows of border wound up parallel to the end of the deck. The last row against house will need to be cut to fit as needed.

Secondary reason is it's easier for me to walk on the finished deck and work in rather than deal with straddling joists as I'm working solo so am on and off deck with each board.

There will be a border of two rows of the lighter color surrounding perimeter of deck saving all the miters for last as they are not true 45s. Have sacrificial boards on each end now and the ends of the decking have to be cut with slight angle to make it line up correctly with border row that will be added at end.

Its approx 40' x 12.5' approx. 500 sq ft. I didn't purchase materials and am working on "friends & family" rate as member is a good friend. If I had to guess you're probably looking at $12k to $15k range with matching railings (that are expensive by themselves). If you want me to research and quote shoot me a pm above prices are probably on upper end of normal range can probably do a bit better. Thanks.

There are various grades of thr Trex/Timber Tech products. Estimate $5 per linear foot. So 5 x 2 x area of your deck.

Yes. Railing is $40plus per linear foot.

Decking is done waiting on railings for moment. Came out pretty nice.

Didn't have enough light boards to run border around small section at end of deck so did what a could with some cut offs



Looks ok trash can goes in that corner so it will be covered anyway...

Just saw this thread- nice work. I built my wife a 16’ x 16’ deck off our kitchen for her birthday two years ago. (It’s what she wanted!) I decked it with TimberTech Azek full synthetic, all hidden fasteners. I built a full bench with backrest and topped it with a drink rail, all in matching deck boards. Covered the frame with matching fascia and also put some short railings up between the house and side steps (stairs symmetrical on opposite sides.) Looks brand new so far. Steps are Azek decking, also. The whole thing looks great. That TimberTech stuff is nice!

Thanks. I think the lights on the railing post caps and stairs are the coolest part of the whole thing.
