Rebarrel Remington 700 in ??

I have a remington 700 that is in .223 right now.. I have enough .223 rifles, so I was thinking to rebarrel this rifle in either 6.5 grendel or 6.5 creedmoor..

I know creedmoor will reach out further, but we live in NY and well not many places to stretch its legs exists..

Grendel on the other hand.. There arent many 700's in that caliber, and it would be something somewhat unique that i could buy the ammunition off the shelf and reload easy enough..

.260 remington is also a possibility..

Really anything that fits into a short action would be cool

So what say everyone?

I made a quick change barrel system for one of my 700 and I love it.
Things to consider:

A) Use the same bolt (much cheaper).
-If you don't want to reload you can do the 22 Nosler.
-If you reload you then could do some very inexpensive and easy ones...
Can use something like a 6x45, 6mmTCU, 6.5TCU.

- One could even chamber for a 6.8 and heaspace for 223 bolt and then
use the 22 nosler and 6.8 dies to make the rounds. This would be 6.8 with
the 223 bolt head but it will work great.

B) Use other bolts.
-The sky is the limit but the 7mm-08 is hard to beat in terms of performance and versatility.
-Ballistically talking is superior to any of the 6.5 and also the 308.
-Barrel life is much better than a large 6mm or the 6.5/260.

Now if you want something really accurate and joy to shoot the 6mmBR with a 1:8 twist
is a proven match winning w/o using much powder is very mild recoil and bore will last much
longer than a 243. It will shoot fatter than a grendel and its 6mm version too.
With lapua bras can go up to 40 reloads depending how hot you go and annealing here and there.
Because of match winning ammo available and the option to reload budget bullets one can use
a very good round for many uses w/o going crazy but otherwise with the 308 derivates the
7mm/08 is hard to beat.

I mean unless you want to go the thumping way like a 358 winchester. This is also fun and
inexpensive using pistol bullets. But not really in the precission category obviously.
Like the 260and 7mm/08 it can be made with 308 brass that is a plus.

Bolts are not cheap so plan ahead. PTG are designed for their own system or to be retrofitted
using the entire body assembly. so no cheap at the end of the day.
you could use another bolt for another rifle and use only for the period of the swap like a seasonal barrel change. And of course headpaced for it that with the thread and nut is easy like a savage.


Same with the 6x45 and 6mm TCU that could be made with inexpensive or free 5.56 brass.
Also great performers for what they are but they require reloading.

I am not sure what 700 model is but if you change bolt heads and re-barrel you might spend more than getting
a new rifle in a new caliber you like. I have done this many times so I guess it also depends on purpose and quality

But instead of the average 223 chamber get one with 7 twist and a match free bore so you can also shoot match loads up
to 80gr VLD bullets. that is also why I mentioned the other wildcats based on the 5.56.

No matter how you do it it doesn't make economic sense. Once you break a part a barebones factory 700 you might
go in for the blue printing and high end build for around $2K w/o optics but as of today you have other choices that
will give you the same or even more features with 1/2 of that budget. Then you have two rifles instead of one.

Some folks start with a high end action like a Stiller or surgeon and put lots of money to build from there, otherwise
the stock factory action is nothing really. Add the blueprinting, trigger, barrel, bolt/extractor, etc.. and you are soon
above 2K. If you are going to do it w/o blue printing then I would just take advantage of the bolt and do a remage
myself.

Afterall you have an amazing Bergara rifle for below $1K in a nice package deal with a R700 type action with integrated recoil lug like
a surgeon action, timmey trigger, Bergara-Shilen barrels, and so many other features that makes no sense to rebuild a
Stock Remington 700.

as much as i hate discouraging someone from doing what they want in their project, you might be better off getting a new action with bolt from a good company rather than the factory Remington one. Between what you have in the gun and the cost of blueprinting it alone, its the price of a much better action already. It's your project though so i'm not gonna stop you.

I never even thought of doing a REMage conversion..

That would solve a couple of problems for me..

The only reason I was going to send the action out to be rebarrelled is because I don't have a lathe at ny disposal..

You don't need a lathe to re-barrel a remington. You also don't need to blueprint it unless the timing is really screwed up
or you are going for a super precise gun like for competition or long range work.
All you need is a jig to break the action loose.
Then you can do a remage barrel from countless options. Where are you located?
The blueprinting doesn't make any sense having deals like the B14 going around that are amazingly accurate and reliable
out of the box.
Even if you bought one of those and re-barrel a brand new B14 in other caliber you will still save money, have a better action
and also 2 rifles instead of one.
Also the savage 10 like the predator (not the XP). Amazing deals.
What are you doing with the PPC bolt anyway? What is your goal in terms of hunting or target shooting?

It can be done and also install a better extractor than the factory system. Interestingly enough the extractor
in the bergara beats all other extractors including the sako and even badger retrofit. IT is like the savage ball
system but at a perfect 40 degree angle on top of the lug. That is yet another amazing feature of the affordable
bergara. the remington even SPS package doesn't come close.

gun around 21" from the shank. The grendel will need a 24"-25" pole to compete with those trajectories.

That is a good one but a tad overbored like most of the 6mm.
I think for a perfect balance the 6mmBR is the ideal that is the king of bench rest competition and works great with faster twists.
The rough is that ammo is more expensive than larger ones but it is match winning ammo. I mean, one can win matches with that
given the equipment and training is also in place.

I think in terms of versatility the 7mm-08 is hard to beat. It does everything any 6mm, 6.5mm and 308 can do and much more.

Can go from 100gr weed wackers to 175gr amazing bullets that leave any of the 6.5mm behind and still have all sort of options
in terms of inexpensive ammo like season deals for deer and other loads. Available everywhere too.
I mean, for the same price of the grendel per shot, why not go with something more versatile and popular?
Afterall the 7mm might be the perfect caliber and ballistically superior to the others.
