Recertification questions

So, my NY CCW was first issued in 2014 in Erie County (Buffalo), and I recertified in 2019. I checked online at the NYSP website, and it shows that I need to recertify on 09/01/2023. Also, I moved out of NYS in 2018 to the Carolinas. I have kept my NY permit with an Erie County address while I am domiciled in the Carolinas as is permitted under the NY court decision that allows NY'ers with an NY CCW permit to keep it if they later move from NY state.

If anyone on here can help and has even done it, my questions are:

1. Do I have to do this online at their website? Or, can I mail it in? And if I can mail it in, where is the paper form? I could not find it on their website. Also, can I see the online recertification questions before I would begin filling them out online if I decided to go that route?

2. With all of this CCIA bullshit, what exactly do I have to do to recertify? 18 hour training? Live Fire? Anything else?

3. I imagine I may have fun with a few handguns still on my NY CCW permit as I have sold them down here.

The process wasn't hard online to be honest. It's stupid and unnecessary but was probably easier for me than mailing it and paying for a stamp. I think I even completed it from my phone.

To anwser your questions it appears as noted above it’s only on line. As stated above it was not hard to do. You will just need your personal information and the firearms that are on your permits information. You will enter your i for and the firearms info.
One thing to keep in mind is your next recertification date is the date you recertify now. I would wait until a week before and do it then.
You do not need to do the training 16+2 since you’re outside of NYS and recertification and not renewing your permit.

Public libraries exist. Go there. If they are good enough for kids that don't have internet at home then they are good enough to go fill out your pistol permit renewal.

Like always you are making excuses why the infringement is fine. It use to be a lifetime license, then 5 years, now its 3, which unless you are up on the information stream you would never know because there is no communication to the permit holder on the changes.
My house for example is 30 miles from the nearest public library so that is not very convenient. I know people that live well over 50 miles from a library. That aside, entering all your personal informaion on a public computer? Are you nuts?
Many older people still have no clue how to or interest in accessing the internet. Should they have their pistols and long guns taken away because the SP doesn't want to enter data?

point me in a direction that talks about being able to keep your NY resident permit when living in another state...going to carolinas but will still coming back to NY here and there and would be interested in that information of how I could keep my NY permit when moving domicile residents....

Unless I'm wrong, and someone can correct me, the training only applies to locations that make your permit expire like Long Island or NYC. If your permit doesn't expire, then you're fine. Recertification is not the same as expiring with the local authorities that issue the permit.

That's my understanding, but double check with the county.

I'm not making excuses. I'm applying the same standards to that as everything else, namely provide your own access. If kids in school need internet to do their school work but they don't have it at home they get told to go to the library. What if they don't have a way to get there? They are told, "tough shit figure it out, it's on you to get there." Well, this is how permits are done (online). If you dont have access just go to the library. Can't get there or don't know how to use the website? Well, tough shit, figure it out.

No special treatment. If we can ask a 9 year old to figure out how to get to the library 5 miles away several times a week for school work then a grown ass adult can figure out how to get there and access the site once every 3 years.

Your only responsibility is to notify the permit issuing official of your change of address. It's up to them if they want to revoke your permit.

If it were me, I'd mail in a amendment with the change of address and let them do what they're going to do.

The frustration is it's another burden to exercise a right.

Yet the left has the nerve to claim proving who you are with ID is too burdensome and voter suppression in violation of rights.

Oh, I agree permits shouldn't even exist. You shouldn't need a permit to exercise a right. I have the same feeling about "protest permits", etc. However my post is more referring to the method of filling them out being not being unfair, not if they should even exist in the first place.

If "just use the library" is good enough for some people, then it's good enough for everyone.

Hey @kev74, actually I think it varies by county. But there is a court decision about this. I posted a thread detailing this in detail a while back. I will find it and post it here.

Take a look at this thread I posted under Politics & Law section, and PM me if you still have questions. Depending on which county your permit is in, it may vary. But the Osterweil v Bartlett decision in the Second Circuit on October 15, 2013 covers you keeping it.

The recertification and renewal is just a harassment process. Nothing about the applicant is done that couldn’t be done by just having a person in the permit office run a computer check without bothering the permit holder

And now it’s even worse because with the CCIA the NYSP can run background check every 30 days from what I saw.

I know someone who just recertified. They thought they were good till 2025 but they actually expired in January of 2023. I got them the link and walked them through it, but I'm curious to to see the response from our Goverors personal police force.
There's going to be a boat load of people who are clueless on the whole matter.

I know a few people that I told that were clueless about it changing to 3 years. I did my part in telling them where to go to recert

Exactly what I did. They were fine with it. SP website no response.

The recert process seems to be that they make you do the work filling in all the guns you acquired since the last time you certified rather than them showing you the list of what you have and you check it and say yes? They are showing they do not have the data from the county in real time and use us like computer operator labor clerks to do their work.
