Recoil Absorbing Stocks for 870? Any Opinions/Experience?

My bones are getting old, and my right shoulder rotator cuff is FUBAR, so looking into recoil absorbing buttstocks for the 870.

I had the barrel Vang-Comp'ed and it has reduced the recoil; and the 25 yd 00 patterns are awesome - 8 of 9 buck in the torso an half-size NRA profile targets.

But could still use more recoil reduction.

Are you shooting for fun? If so check out the Aguilla mini shells. Really fun to shoot. I did a test on a whole raw chicken at 20 yds and was surprised!

I wishes were fishes. Have the pad that came with the ATI tactical stock.

Shoot for "fun", but it's geared to defensive/offensive use.

I think there are several things you can do. They all have a positive effect...

The remington super-cell is a great cushion and inexpensive. Hogue and others will also be effective...
Remington Supercell Recoil Pad Remington 870 1100 11-87 SP-10

Alternativelly if you get a neoprene cheek pad those take off some of the precieved slap on the cheek specially for those who get hammered
on the upper cheek bone. Overall it makes people weld to the stock better (hug with more love vs. fear) and the better position results
in more predictable forces and friendlier push.



If you don't mind a bit extra weight fill out the stock with some bird shot before you put the new recoil pad.
We should not just pour the bird shot so depending on the stock type you have you might use a nice plastic
bag with shot and double bag it and wrap it around with some packaging tape so the shot doesn't end up all
over the place. In wood stocks some people use the existing hole and fill a condom with the shot (double bag it too)
or might even bore a second channel to put a 1" PVC pipe full with the shot.
the idea is to add the weight that will work as a dead blow hammer for you. In this case weight is your best friend.
One additional benefit is that shotguns with long feeding tubes when fully loaded they can be muzzle heavy
so this weight in the back actually feels a lot more balanced and easier to shoot.

I just installed a Kicklite stock on a Maverick 88 but was very disappointed in its performance. Took it out this weekend to give it a try. Company claims 40-50% reduction in perceived recoil and to me it feels no better than the original stock. Gonna give them a call today.

I heard the Knoxx Spec Ops stocks weren't that good. That Super Cell is a nice recoil pad if you have a synthetic stock.

Magpul SGA in Flat Dark Earth. Outstanding reviews - reduces felt recoil with great recoil pad and design, mounts more naturally.

If it sucks, or is great, I'll post here. But Magpul stuff is mostly well thought out - except for the BAD lever, hated that.

Good stock. The pistol grip setup is comfortable. Never shot with one though.

I have the Magpul stock on my Mossberg 500, and I can shoot it all day long with very little discomfort. Learning to push/pull is also a great help. Make believe that you're trying to stretch out the gun from the front and rear like a rubber band on every shot. It takes a massive amount of felt recoil out of every shot. The last class I shot with Chris Fry of MDTS was nearly 500 rounds in a day and I felt like a million bucks on Monday morning.

It also comes with multiple inserts to adjust the LOP to your specific liking. Can't say enough good things about this stock.

I have a Graco on my trap gun, a BT-99 that is known for its kick. I have the pad rotated to fit into my shoulder pocket and the gun fits me well, the recoil spring is tightened down so it only cuts the sharpest end of the motion. Works very well, hard to beat. All a rubber recoil pad does is cut the weakest part of the recoil, not the hardest....

Otherwise a gas gun like a Beretta 400 or 1301, Remington 1100, is going to be the lightest recoiling action. No short stroke pumping either.

I have a knoxx on my 870, haven't seen any difference in the recoil, still kicks like a pack mule. Save your money if your thinking about the knoxx "blackhawk" stock. Puts a thump on your cheek too from where you would shoulder it for cheek weld

I want to get one of those for my 870 tactical. I have put a couple on and they weren't fun, but it wasn't too terrible. I didn't have the best tools either.

I'm definitely interested in your thoughts on the Magpul. My 870 destroys my shoulder when I throw slugs out of it. Holy recoil, Batman!
