1 in 12 twist rate is fine for long range with bullets in 155 - 190gr. But the 1 in 10 twist will let you play with heavier bullets if you get into hand loading. Good luck. Savage is a good choice.
lets see I currently own 4 remington 700 or maybe 5 2 are hunting rifles the rest are varmint 26" heavy barrel so I'm well aquainted with the 700 I have nothing against bergara at all I just have never seen shot or held 1 so untill that happens they are not in the runing savage i've owned and know people who still own and shoot them a little hit and miss better than ruger and if i go the new rifle route they are in the runningHave you ever shot a remington 700?
Bergara is the cadlac of the 700. The one Remington never built.
Savage 12 is also a tank because of the lrp beefed up receiver. Same cut they use in several aupermagnums but in short action.
168gr is not a long range load unless you are talking monolitic/solids.
1:10 will work but it is excessive for the average 168, 175 load.
When you say long range what type of long range? Anything beyond 800 yards?
Any hunting or metal scoring targets involved?

well said but untill I can hold and maybe shoot a Bergara they are not on my short list. The quality of the equipment tends to be proportional to the money invested into it. It is not unusual to spend 5-6k in rifle and glass just to get started in Long Range and if one is serious to be able to start competing. Also some investment aside for professional training if one has never had any.
Savage gives you a good value in entry level with better than average in starting packages with the 16 LRP being the most accurate out of the box.
Bergara gives you the best value no question. It gives you features and quality of rifles 2-3 times their price tag.
They are based on the strong breach / head of the R700 but 10 times better to get started with a better footing in the long range game.
Folks want opinions. Those are some opinions with some facts to go with them.
I posted a thread about this article awhile back.

It was not the Marine nor the Spaniard that caught my attention in this article it was the Texan with 13 world championships Ed Shilen.not sure if I have any confidence in this video why would I care what a Marine thinks there hasn't been a Marine sniper make it to the international sniper games in years the army amu is a totally different story spanish steel has no real big following in the world German Sweedish American and Japanese would make me take notice and exactly why would i care about spanish investors waste of time that
Ed Shilen is a true champion bur I doubt that Ed has his hand on every barrel he's probably more of a consulton than anything else again I've nothing against Bergara I'm just the type of person who likes to kick the tires and take the car for a test drive advertisements and video's might get me to look at something but i have to see it touch it or maybe shoot it that's why I drove to Hartford Ct to cabela;s hoping they would have 1 in stock to tell the truth I'm leaning more and more toward rebarreling my remington vtr I've never owned a shilen barrel but I've had 2 Hart's and both are exceotionelIt was not the Marine nor the Spaniard that caught my attention in this article it was the Texan with 13 world championships Ed Shilen.
But good luck on what you do chose!
They actually made substantial changes after they partnered with shilen.Ed Shilen is a true champion bur I doubt that Ed has his hand on every barrel he's probably more of a consulton than anything else again I've nothing against Bergara I'm just the type of person who likes to kick the tires and take the car for a test drive advertisements and video's might get me to look at something but i have to see it touch it or maybe shoot it that's why I drove to Hartford Ct to cabela;s hoping they would have 1 in stock to tell the truth I'm leaning more and more toward rebarreling my remington vtr I've never owned a shilen barrel but I've had 2 Hart's and both are exceotionel

You want an accurate gun that goes together like Legos? Get a savage.
You can literally rebarrel it yourself.
Anything that can be done by the 308 can be done with the 6.5 Grendel. Once I get settled in here, I have to get my Howa 6.5 out and find a place to go so I can stretch it out.
