Ok so have the Lyman 49th edition and the Hornady 10th edition manuals. Both give a very different scale for loading. I am using hornady fmjbt and also have some speer tmj I am going to use up. H335 is the powder I am using. The issue is Lyman lists 24.3-27 whereas hornady lists 20.8-23.2 and the 23.2 is in the red. I am a bit confused as to which one to follow. They are being shot out of 16" 1/8 twist. I am not looking for load data only guidance as ti which book to follow. On the flip side I had loaded some armscor to 25 based off the Lyman manual and was seeing the flame come out the barrel in the scope. That's what really got me wondering before I load any more.

either use the load data from the bullet or the powder manufacturer. The Lyman book is ok for some things but, if it conflicts with either of the manufacturers data go with the lowest starting load and work your way up from there.

A majority of the time you will find Lyman uses different brass and primers than the manufacturers do therefore the discrepancy in load data.

That's the thing hodgdon lists 23-25.3 that makes it even more confusing. I am wondering if I should just load a 23 and see where it goes. That puts me on the low end of both lyman and hodgdon but the upper end of hornady. The armscors and hornady are identical.

Try bouncing it off the reloading assistant app too. The more you cross check the better.

Even there, they didn't list the fmjbt with h335. I have been going off the spr sp which is the closest I believe from what I have read.

Yeah that was some I saw as well. Kind of reassuring that there are others using ither info besides the hornady book. Just makes me wonder why so conservative in their data.

Once I started having questions, and didn't know how much I could "push" my charges once I had rounds that cycled, I realized just what chronometers were for.

I usually start with the lightest load listed an work up from there. It might waste some components during the work up phase but I don't mind that.

I have noticed the large swings in powder charges in the new Hornady book and the new Lee book. Kind of makes you wonder.

I also like the caliber specific manuals that midway sells. They have multiple source data all in one book.

I always use three sources. 2 reloading books, and the manufacturers load data from their website.

SR4756 is a confusing powder to load for. One manual says you're grossly undercharging. Another says you're overcharging by almost 40%. I found a load, I am using up my can, and never getting it again.

Different COAL's can explain some of the variance, but that's a pretty small amount.

I also recently started reloading 223.

Here is some data from my recent range sessions:

16" 1:8 barrel
Velocities averaged from 10 rounds through Magnetospeed v3.

Factory PMC 55gr - 2818 fps​

Reloads (55gr Hornady FMJBT, Hogdon H335 powder, COAL 2.2 inches)

23 gr - 2724 fps
24 gr - 2780 fps
24.5 gr - 2878 fps
25 gr - 2931 fps

*24.5 gr was loaded after 23gr, 24gr, and 25gr were tested.​

Of note, the flash from the H335 was really very impressive. It'd be nice to have a flash hider, but...NY.
