ok. Let the war begin.

I ammthinking of building a custom 6mm creed rifle.

Which action do you like and why? The rem 700 or the tikka t3. Which should i build.

While i am in it. Who is your favorite pick to build it? Why is the prices for the barrel and setting it up in the action?

I do not use any bolt gun at this time so i am not predisposed to either action.

Anyway i can use 308 magpul mags in it? And chassis use magpul 308 mags?

I am a 700 guy, the after market support is great. Never messed with a Tikka so I cannot comment on the aftermarket support.
The 700 platform is like the small block Chevy of the gun world, you can get all the parts aftermarket and not have to run anything Remington if you don't want to.

Dennis Van Tassel (Mary's Husband) is my gun builder. He is very reasonable but, busy so if you are looking for anything before spring it aint going to happen. You are looking at paying for the reamer, go gauge and labor if you want custom engraving (instead of stamping) it is about 30 bucks more. Ball park figure 500ish depending on the price reamer and guage.

The mag compatibility depends upon the bottom metal you get. If you are going to use this for bench rest shooting/ small group shooting you may want to go with a target action (single feed) with no mag cut. It is a stronger action and you don't have to worry about loading to mag length (not that you have to do that anyway).

I am not a chassis guy to me they add unnecessary weight to the gun. I prefer to use Bell and Carlson stocks.

What barrel maker are you going to use? I like Hart Barrels they are reasonably priced and very good quality.

I am gonna run it is preciaionrifle, so a mag will beneeded. I would juat like to be able to run pmags just cause they are cheap and i can go from 10-25 round mags easily. Just tobe clear i want to run ar308 mags. Possible?

I would not bother doing two barrels at once.
I do not know of any bottom metal for the 700 that will run the SR/LR/AR 308 pmags. Even the MAGPUL bottom metal runs an AICS style mag. Magpul Hunter 700 Magazine Well : Cabela's

I like Tikka rifles but if your are going to build off a action I would choose a Remington action. There are so many parts for the 700 compared to the Tikka. I don’t think I have ever saw a new Tikka bare action for sale.

I am going with patriot valley arms in pa for my Tikka build. He has a good reputation online and alot of happy customers from what I found. I have not used him yet. He also has experience working on Tikka.

I vote for Rem 700 platform. It can be built into anything you want and made as accurate as it needs to be. It's like an AR of bolt guns. Look into something called Remage. It's a conversion for Rem 700 to accept barrels like Savage action. No need to send the rifle to gunsmith to rebarrel. Easy DIY job like an AR. In my world this company makes the best Rem 700 chassis. They are very popular among competitive shooters.

Which action do you like and why?

I like the remington 700, Savage 10 and mauser type actions because they are the most popular actions on the planet
with endless options and aftermarket support. The most popular is the 700 specially for us here in the US this is a great starting
point. But we have savage actions that right now out-shoot Remington out of the box and they are cheaper and more versatile over time
with also amazing aftermarket support.
Savage has the precission carbine action that is the same tube they use in the BA and LM but for short actions that is stronger than
the factory Remington 700. Also I would not use a remington 700 original unless one has one but instead any of the remington 700
aftermarket actions that give a lot more quality and features. I have used blueprinted actions but my brother has the Surgeon and I love
that action. Surgeon, stiller, mausfield

The bergara is also a much better action than the factory and it is more cost effective.

While i am in it. Who is your favorite pick to build it?

My favorite builder is Mek Enterprises! lol ... But there are many good ones in the area. Dark eagle is a prestigious builder in the finger lakes region
whose rifles have raked many wins. ... Darkeagle Custom, Inc.

Why is the prices for the barrel and setting it up in the action?

A factory Remington will need to be blueprinted, the bolt timed, you will add a better trigger I am guessing, drill and retap the top
for a steel rail. etc... A Tikka you will want to cut the face to remove the taper and this way get a wider shank flush with the action.

It really depends on what action and what you want done with the action. With that type of caliber I might order 2 barrels from
the same stock as they do not last too long and then have a barrel nut system so I can do the 2nd swap myself.

Tikka is a great action because of consistency for the cost but the remington 700 is a more popular stronger and battle proven action
and with deals like the bergara it is hard to pass to start with a budget rifle.

No. you need a bolt that can reliably rake the rounds and for that you need a special bolt head like some rifles have. Or otherwise machine
a solution or screw up the magazines. This doesn't mean one can make it work, a different story is how reliable is going to be.
for duarabilty and reliability it seems the AI system is the new standard for bolt action.

you can have a barrel nut system in any of those actions. A bergara will take barrel with the barrel nut and you can do it yourself. But seriously do not discard the savage because you can order the barrel, swap it, and go shoot teh day lights out.

I like the Tikka because it's tacticool and awesome looking however I'm also considering a r 700 because of that aftermarket. Probably going to stick with 308 because I already have dies and shells for it and I really don't like paying a dollar a round for 6.5mm Creedmoor

Yes. Esentially is the same action but instead of openin the top like most do including reminton and the savage 10, they leave the material alla round and just cut the port. It is really bases on the single shot target action but with the bottom cut to take a magazine and make it a repeater. The same action they use in the BA taxtical models and 338 lapua magnum but this one being short action is very strong. That is why the lrp shoot half moa out of the box. Real moa and not internet/forums moa. Not bad for a 1000 dollar rifle. The savage saves a lot of headaches to get shooting very well fast. I would save the money and better spend it im proffesional training that is going to make a much bigger impact vs the gun. Glass too.

I tried out a ruger precision at a LGS today and I'm a little put off. The action isn't very smooth it felt like it was grinding or scraping through the movement of the bolt. Are all Ruger Precisions like that? it didn't feel right and it just didn't feel smooth at all. I want a rifle that has a really smooth action like my No1 Mk3 lee enfield. Smooth as butter and few other guns actually have this level of smoothness and I don't like when the bolt has a lot of play in it.

Try a bergara. Those are so well machined that is like they run in ball bearings. The RPR is a smart design but too new and kind of rough. Some folks are going to love it for the tacticool style and some are going to hate it. Ruger has been doing some pretty good innovation that is great but they need more time.

Also if you see a savage with a round tactical lever try it out. I know some people are against savage for who knows what reasons but those like the LRP and the predator (not the XP) ride very smoothly and stock rifles have been leaving all the others behind in terms of accuracy out of the box. This is where the factory accustock beats all the other tupperware stocks or then for around 1000 and up they have the HS and other stocks and full aluminum chasis.
The Bergara is the same thing, they are a step above everyone else on that segment. One literally takes their rifles out fo the box and start shooting 3/4moa or better and this happens with almost every rifle. Very consistent and a great price.

High quality match 308 is nearly yhe same price.

If you reload you have bullets for the 308 that beat the 6.5 creedmore factory bullets even at extreme long range.
Those are going to be about 1 dollar every round so it will not be cheap but will be cheaper than buying match ammo
and the best thing they are easy to make. And this might be something you do not use all the time anyway.
For everything else and reloading you can make the 308w more affordable and more versatile including quality ammo
even if it is not long range.
So one could say in practical terms the 308w can take the role of the 6.5 but the 6.5 cannot take every role of the 308
like for example if we take 180 or 190gr premium bullets for hunting the largest game.

I mean, there is a reason to love the 6mm and 6.5mm but more times than not is not really needed. In 6mm I would
probably choose the 6mm BR that is an amazingly accurate and efficient round but really adjusted so I can have a much
larger barrel life and save on powder. And that would make a nice step between a 22 and a 308 w/o going nuts.
Long range the 6mm BR is also awesome.

A round that is often overlooked is the 7mm-08 tat is probably the best round there is from the 308 case. It does everything the 6mm, 6.5mm and 308 do and a bit more including long range and even varmints if you want.

That is a really practical caliber and barrels will last almost as long as the 308. possibly 7-8,000 rounds accuracy life.

That is cool but the pmags are limited by COAL.
The AI/AW gives also 10rds and 2.980 max coal.
Plenty of firepower and the capability to use longer cartriges and loads.

Isn't the AI system kind of the standard for military, competition, and pretty much everything in the bolt action now?
Aside from the AI shot and long action magazines that are more costly I also have the accurate and even some ruger polymer AI style magazines that while they are not the same they actually work for all around beaters.

The AI is the way to go imo. The actual AI magazines you can run them over with a truck and they will still work. They started as British mil spec
to the highest standards in the first place, right?

This flat line bullet in 160gr is something you can shoot from the 308 at 2.8 coal.

This will give A G1 of .585 (tested) and provide you an effecitve range up to 1,400 yards and possibly more in ideal conditions.

They are 1.3 dollars each bullet but will allow you to put trajectories similar to competitive 6mm and 6.5 mm rounds yet more
momentum on the target. Something you don't want to shoot all the time but reloading still cheaper than many commercial match options.

When we move to lead free bullets (military is also doing this) then the 308 starts making more sense again including long range
work.

The Tikka is a smoother action. I’ve own both and the Tikka is hands down a better action. Overall the Remington is better. Since your looking at just the action try the Tikka.
