I was going through and adding my stuff to my survival bag and I checked my compass. I know the worlds gone crazy but east has not switched to north as my compass states.

The moral compass has gone due south, and there doesn't seem to be anyone with enough magnetism to get it properly re-oriented.

Occasionally compasses do go bad. That's why the military would have us check each of our compasses before sending us out on a land nav course.

It was a cheap one so I get it. Makes sense.

Suunto Liquid filled compasses are the best. I have had mine for a little over 20 years. they simple and easy to use

I've had a small pin on bubble compass pinned on my hunting coat for years and just this last season noticed it was way off, it's small so it's not really marked in degree's but if it was it would be about 45 degrees off!

Mine essentially stopped moving on its own. It would only move if I moved it quickly and jolted it.

Before my release from USCG active duty I brought my assigned boat, a 44 ft. MLB to the yards at Point Judith for a refit. (I was back driving her as a reservist in 2 months)
It was an overnight trip there. We tied up at the CG station in the Hamptons and went to one our radioman’s homes for supper and sleep. (He’s one of the starfighter pilots in the first Star Wars movie, just because of his voice)
So the boat was stripped before we left home. Had a compass and a radio and my wristwatch for navigation. As we were heading south out of the inlet I check the compass and it is way way off, and it’s foggy as all heck. Bad enough cutting across The Race without radar in the fog , but I’ll be dammed if I’m going to do it without a compass. The current through The Race is crazy strong and fast. That’s why you get the swordfish and makos through there.
So I’m trying to figure out what I’m going to do and I run my hands around the compass to see if anything is loose, and I come up with a knife and fork, government issue messdeck type and pull them out from behind my compass and I am golden.
Somebody from the base came down and had supper in my chair, probably dreaming about surfing her through the inlet.
