It was part of the bankruptcy. I read an article regarding the new owners and they claimed that they would eventually be calling many of the laid off workers back, after they did some retooling. They did not give a time frame though.

If you read the article he is specifically talking about retooling and modernizing the Illion location.

Which is a mistake - especially in conjunction with closing the newer facilities elsewhere. And weeks to months to modernize Illion? There's a reason Remington didn't take that route. This guy has a nostalgic dream and reality is going to knock him flat on his ass before he gets to see it.
If I were Ruger, I'd be calling every single one of those 585 "incredible" people while they're furloughed and offering to move them to wherever they set up the Marlin production.

A few years ago, I was camping in the Cooperstown area. The family on the next site were locals. They camped there during the summer furlough. Remington regularly furloughed workers in the summer and again around the holidays.
Even then, he said Remington was in the process of moving some of their operations BACK to NY from Alabama. The level of production in the south was too low. Not to offend the people from the south, but they have a totally different work ethic than we do here.
I've often described it this way: In NY, especially closer to the city, "I'll get to it as soon as possible". In more rural areas, "I'll try to get to it today or tomorrow." In the south, " I'll see if I can get to it in the next week or two. Really depends on how the fishing goes."
Back in the 80's a builder I knew in Western NC said he had hard time getting people to work. When they worked, they worked hard. But they would only work long enough to get enough money for what they wanted to do next.
