Restored Mossberg Shotgun

Skipping a story, I had a 500A, disassembled, and wrapped up in a garbage bag with duct tape. Inside the bag was the trigger group, bolt, and rails smothered in Vaseline; two barrels...a modified choke field barrel, and a rifled slug barrel. Both of these were rusted up, but no pitting. The receiver was in great shape, but the paint was pretty crappy. So all in all, a mess.

I ditched the birch stock and ordered a Boyd's in Forest Camo...nice! I figured I would just stick with a slug gun fix-up...cold blue the barrel, new rear sight...but started looking into Duracoat and Cerokate as the finish on the receiver was shot.

Browsing around, I found Tarjac in Waterloo...Cerakote was half price for December. So, one slug barrel, one receiver, and one magazine tube; $85.00. I was told turn-around was about three weeks. They blasted everything clean and applied the finish...surprise...one week it was done.

Graphite black finish, beautiful! And everthing matches. Tarjac did a great job, the service was super. And with the new lam stock, wow! So yes, shameless plug for Tarjac. I was going to sell the thing; not now....got a pretty neat slug gun for deer season...might scope it, it is drilled and tapped.

The birch buttstock and forend are on hand. They have pressed checkering, and actually they are undamaged but the finish needs some work. Hell, a couple a shots of laquer...

But for the price of the Boyd pieces it didn't pay to refinish, plus they came with a new Pachmyer recoil pad. The old one is like a brick, and new one would have to be fitted.

Nice choice of finishes. The aluminum receiver and slug barrel on my 500A has had camo tape on it for 10 years. I pulled it all off and cleaned them up some but a good cerekote finish would definitely bring it back to life . Thanks for the idea. I needed a winter project to keep me busy for a while.

At first I ws going to buy a can of the Duracoat and spray it myself. I think it 30-35 for the spray, then shipping on top, and then a rookie spray job. Tarjac was around 50 for the barrel, but then when I was told half off and everything was only 80-85, well it was a no brainer. Truthfully, I had told them I was only doing the receiver and the barrel, but when I drove out I brought along the magazine tube. No extra charge for the tube!

Check out the Vaseline...

All said and done, I'm in for about 230. Got the gun for free.

Looks like I sold the birch buttstock, so a couple of bucks back.

Now if I can sell the shot barrel (mod choke, vent rib).....

Thanks man. Came out pretty good. Not adding in my labor, I'm into it for about 250, but sold the stocks and field barrel for 50 total, so say $200 or so. Come summertime I'll think about selling it...I love my Ithaca.
