Restrictions Letter

So I have typed up a letter to send to the judge regarding removal of restrictions. Tell me what you think. Is there anything that could be worded differently or changed.

My name is and I have been a resident in Clinton County my whole life. I am writing this letter to request a release from all restrictions on my New York State, Clinton County, Pistol License from the Sportsman Pistol License I currently possess.

I have been married to my wonderful wife for 12 years and have an amazing 7 year old son. I belong to a local gun range located in the town I reside. I am an avid hunter and shooter at the range. I was a volunteer firefighter with the Chazy Volunteer Fire Department up until a few years ago but left due to not being able to devote as much time as I had in the past. I have been working at CVPH for the past 8 years. I served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 2005. I was assigned to the 962nd Ord. Co. in Plattsburgh.

In my line of work I mostly work at a desk in the Emergency Department as a clerk. On many occasions I have had to deal with psychiatric patients both positively and negatively. In dealing with these patients I have been threatened with bodily harm and harm to my family. While most of the threats are harmless, there are some that had made me wonder what could happen. While these patients do not know where I live at the time they do have access to our name badges that we have to wear that states our first and last name. I love the work that I do but fear for the safety of my family when we are out and run into these individuals. I have had at least one instance where I saw someone who had been a patient and they proceeded to stare at me while in a store.

I believe if you are going to be a responsible firearms owner that you must practice to develop good safety habits and the skills with which to be competent. To that end when my firearms are not with me at the range, my long guns are locked in a cabinet and the pistols in a handgun safe at home. While I am requesting consideration for a full carry permit, it is not my intention to carry everywhere I do go. I am currently looking for options to add a safe in my vehicle so as to have double security in the event I am carrying and need to lock the firearm in my vehicle.

In closing, I would like to thank you for your time reading this. I am aware that this is not a right but a privilege. Because of my training and competency and my firm belief that I am of good moral and ethical character, I would like to respectfully request I be considered for unrestricted carry in Clinton County and NYS.

Why remove all of the "get to know me" info? Also the one line about practice could actually be up with the spot mentioning the range I belong to right?

Most judges dont really care. Not sure about your county judges, but here they wouldnt give a hoot if you had to handle money in your own business.

The new judge is supposedly pro gun just not sure why he left them on. The old judge you had to list the restrictions.

It is not a date.

You are there to remove restrictions. Keep it on track. Discuss the issues at hand. The issue is pistol permit stuff.

+1...Judges don't want their time wasted (according to the officers I spoke with when asking for pointers about writing my letter to the judge). Get to the point, be polite and stay on track.

I'll say what everyone here is thinking and dancing around but not coming out to say......

The following paragraph is a like a Pandora's Box:

I'd remove everything above and just state the place you work and that you're a clerk in the Emergency Department. End of story.

I would say .. since FUAC has armed body guards payed by taxpayer dollars .. i demand my restrictions be removed since they are not even in the code of law.

Ok everyone thanks for the input. I will definitely simplify it. The only reason I added in the part about the psychiatric patients was due to a couple of emts had done so when they submitted their letter under the old judge, who was harder on permit holders, and got approval.

I would add that you have studied article 35 and have a high respect for human life etc.

Ill just add that all the "experts" on this subject have told me to NEVER suggest to a judge that you plan on using a gun to shoot someone, even in self defense.
This is why we are suggesting leaving the part out about vengeful patients.

The best thing to add to that letter is a training certification form. Take a concealed carry class that includes Art. 35, and live fire training with a reputable company. This shows the judge that you are willing to sacrifice your time to understand safety and the law.

I would also agree with everyone who says keep your job info out of the letter, to me it sounds like you are going to shoot a psychopath at your job.

I would agree with Doc8404 post #9....i do remember many discussions regarding giving self-defense as a reason for a CCW as NOT being a great idea. It implies that the carrier is somehow being prone to fights, arguments, etc and needs to protect himself from attackers. I do not buy this line of thought, but apparently, judges do. A mention of self-defense as a primary reason is, ironically and illogically, a bad idea. Correct me if I am mistaken.

Then why didn't it get you an unrestricted the first time around. Speaking with 25 years of active and reserves with 3 post 911 deployments doing anti terrorism and force protection and then infantry medical.

From what I have been told, since they were listed on the application he is adding them. It was something that had to be done under the previous judge. He has been sending out the paperwork to those requesting removal of them.

@chris1977 I thank you for your service, but what I mean is you show that you have taken the time to study the laws and understand the consequences and your actions for the state of NY. It certainly helps you separate yourself from your peers with PP, giving reason to the argument of what makes you different from any other permit holder. Shows your willingness to go above what minimum requirements are. I feel it help get me restrictions lifted in Onondaga County.

Oh no I definitely got that part. I have been reading up on it the past coue days to familiarize myself with the laws. I was stating as far as formal training I feel I have had that already with my military background.

Thanks. I hope with all of the tips I will have a much better letter tomorrow. Was going to do tonight but was kind of a stressful day and just wanted to chill plus got my lockbox for my 2 new friends so they are much more secure.
