Revisit: Savage Axis 2 223 Remington - Potential 1/2 MOA?

I've had this rifle for at least four and a half years. It has thousands of rounds through it and I love it every time I shoot it. Although, It is a hunting rifle, I've never taken varmints or game with it. I've taken it out for coyote a few times but, to me, it is primarily a range toy.

The Rifle is the Savage Axis 2 in 223 Remington. It has an 1:9 twist rate that giving it the ability to shoot a wide range of bullet weights. The barrel has a sporter profile, I call this a "varmint-sporter".

The current iteration uses a Nikon Prostaff 5 4-12x40 BDC which is an good for hunting. The stock is a pillar bedded Boyd's AT-ONE thumbhole in the obligatory coyote tan. The trigger is a Timney upgrade to the Savage Accutrigger. The pull weight is about 1 pound.

Yes, that is a Kahntrol clamp-on muzzle break and it is obnoxiously loud indoors. But, the rifle has no felt recoil.

Also, note the custom built 10-round mag. I bought it off E-bay.

Today was shooting some random reloads using Hornady 55 gr V-MAX with 24 gr. Hodgdon H4895, Norma Brass, and CCI small primers.

I wasn't really expecting anything mind blowing. But, I did manage groups between1/2 and 3/4 MOA.

I picked up a Thompson center compass. 6.5 for like $289 its supposed to do one MOA out of the box, haven't shot it yet.

They must have fixed the trigger because mine is very crisp, A little heavy but breaks clean. If my rifle shot that good I would be ecstatic.

Its hard getting reloading stuff right now The only thing I could buy was the burger since its so expensive, I just bought 2 boxes ,and one box of lapua brass because I wanted to see how they do and I couldn't find anything else at the time.

I bought a couple cases of Norma TAC 223 a couple years back. I’ve run through it, but, I have about 1,600 cases stashed. I stocked up on reloading supplies back in March. It was originally supposed to be something to pass the time in lockdown. I’ve run out of small pistol primers.

Finding 6.5 match bullets is a little sketchy. But, hunting billets shouldn’t be hard to get.

i have a Savage in 223 , has the stevens trigger in it .. did a little trigger work on it and filled the hollow stock with fiberglass bondo and added
lead bird shot in the spaces of the forearm a epoxy'ed it in there to bring the balance back some .. she is heavy .. aprox 9 lbs


i have been thinking on getting a boyds stock for it .. but she shoots ... if i do my part ..

I got my Compass for $189 first year of production. It shoots all touching with Winchester 129 grain hollow points. It sits in a Boyd's stock, tps rings, and a Leupold VX freedom 3-9.

i have even thought of getting a boyds at one stock for my mosin .. do i need to bang my head some LOL
