I disagree. Commodities that have useful value will do well. People still need food etc. Proctor and Gamble type businesses usually survive these thing quite well. Crypto? It only has the value someone else gives it.

People don't understand crypto.

Government can seize it much easier than gold or silver.

All crypto is built on "blockchain" which basically means every bitcoin (or anything other cryto coin) has built into it a ledger listing everyone who has ever owned it.

If a government really wants to play hardball they could say "we're seizing every bitcoin this cartel has right now", even the ones we don't know about yet.

Even if they don't have the keys for them now, that means that all of them are subject to seizure if they are ever identified in the future.

Would you want to accept bitcoins as payment from an organization knowing that those coins can be seized by the government at any time ?

Would anyone else want to accept bitcoins from you if they knew you traded with that cartel ?

Think of it like a John Doe warrant. A judge just issues an order to seize any bitcoins that organization X possesses now or in the future.

Then all they need to do is look in a ledger to see if "X" shows up in the history of owners at any time after that date, and you're out of luck.

Such predictions are a futures market.

2 years ago who would have thought that the price of oil would go negative, or that toilet paper would become highly sought after.

In a real SHTF scenerio, the commodities that become most valuable after could be something completely unexpected.

I mostly stock things that I think will have value to me.

I read an interesting short story a while back about an apocalypse, and it was set in a small town near the grain belt. The shit went down near the end of harvest season. They had enough grain in the elevators to feed millions of people for years.

The most popular people in town were the ones who knew how to make a wide variety of food from a small number of ingredients.

I do not hoard cash. I keep my bills payed and purchase sustainable items.

Tools of my trades are an example. Anything you can hold in your hand could be sustainable. Building materials, vehicle maintenance items, recycled materials to use pyrolysis of plastics and wood, .....

Anything that will be useful after a collapse will have sustainable values.

You didn't answer the questions though. If fiat currency is worthless, what is the value of gold set against? Will a gram of gold be worth 8 chickens or 14 and who gets to decide? How does one make purchases with their precious metals if the quantity of goods purchased is not equal to the bar value? Will we need assay offices on every corner to verify the weight and purity of the gold?

Well I am sure they use bunkers because they dont want people to come and go and make parties there.
They also have a service to store your key decoupled and encrypted so, should you loose all your keys you Don't loose all your investment if you can prove your identity or might even require peer approval.
Safe Biometrics related to digital assets are even more important than the traditional security boxes in Zurich s popular banks.

Who sets the value of gold and against what currency?

I say this to people quite often when they state, "gold just went up."
"No, it actually didn't. The value of the dollar dropped." blank stares ensue like a 2 yr old that just shit it's diaper.
I then say, "hypothetically, if an ounce of gold increases to $25 and it was worth 10 ozs of silver, It is still worth 10 ozs of silver after the increase."
