[Frankly]

I totally understand why they need to do these restrictions given the liabilities and that some people have violated their reasonable rules... but I'm also glad I let my membership slide. Being closed more often makes the chance of going there and being left alone less likely. I really enjoy shooting without having people policing me.

And... we need more safe places to shoot! It almost makes me want to buy a farm.

New Pistol & Rifle Range Operating Hours
Rochester Brooks has long traditions: traditions of supporting our freedom to use firearms, and traditions of doing so safely. To ensure our safety, and the safety of those around us, we've established rules and procedures, and provided training for our members.
Unfortunately we've found some members and their guests ignore our rules and perform acts that place others in danger. During one recent event rounds left a range and hit trees over the heads of our members and guests. On a separate day rounds left a range and impacted near some of our employees. We've witnessed a shooter handling a firearm when people were downrange setting targets, a man firing at a can on the ground, and found a reactive ball target on one of the ranges. All are safety hazards and violations of our rules.
Our rules require: No handling of firearms when someone is downrange; All rounds MUST impact the BERM; No shooting of targets on the ground and use of proper targets only.
The Board has a duty to ensure the safety of our members, guests, employees and neighbors. We need to ensure members and guests utilize the ranges in a safe manner and pose no risk to others. In light of the recent incidents, the board passed new rules for use of the rifle and pistol ranges. These rules take effect on June 5, 2017.
Pistol and Rifle Ranges will only be open during the following hours:
Monday - Closed
Tuesday - Closed
Wednesday - 9am to Sunset
Thursday - 9am to Sunset
Friday - noon to Sunset
Saturday - 9am to 5pm
Sunday - 9am to 5pm
We are creating a team of Range Monitors who will supervise the ranges during these hours. Our goal is to have all monitors trained and certified as NRA Range Safety Officers *. The Range Monitors will advise members or their guests of rules and any violations. If the members and/or their guests refuse to comply, then the Monitor shall report the violation to the club manager. Repeated violations will be reported to the President and the Board. ANY violation may subject the member to discipline as set forth in our rules. Remember that members are responsible for the actions of their guests.
Also Remember membership cards must be displayed when using our facilities and guests must sign our waiver before using our facilities. The Monitors may check for membership cards, and ask guests to sign the waiver.
Please cooperate with the monitors and understand they are there to ensure your safety and the safety of others. If you wish to join the team of Range Monitors please contact Scott at the club office.
We regret the inconvenience this might pose to some of our members, but we cannot turn a blind eye to the incidents that occurred this spring. We must take reasonable steps to ensure the safe operation of our ranges.

I like to be alone when shooting also. It allows me to focus more on the goals of that particular session as opposed to yip yapping with other shooters. When do go its usually in middle of the week. At my last, huge 10am to 6pm session there wasn't another soul there till the end of the day. I had the 100/200/300 yard line all to myself which was great!

its just amazing at what you see at a range even thou posted paper targets only ...
but if you clean up your mess at what your shooting none knows .. some members and even non member try to bitch (open range) .. hay you can't shoot that here ( clay targets on the berm ) dude there bio degradable look over at the skeet fields all in orange chunks on the ground .. come back next week , it looks a lot different .. look at that 55 gal trash can at the shooting bench .. full of bullet holes REALLY .. you shot up the trash can ..

what really gets me going is the guys that go to a range to sight there gun in at 100 yrds and hit everything but the target .. Really ..
start at 25 bore sight and get on paper , then move back ..

I could shoot up anything i want here cuz the upper members know i clean up .. havent pushed the tannerite yet LOL

I've always asked and gotten permission to pick up unbroken clay targets off the skeet fields to use on the pistol bays. I wonder if they'll still give me permission now

I put clays up on the berms all the time. I never knew that wasn't kosher. I also hang them from string on the rifle range.

I use clays on the berms all the time. I can't see why that would not still be allowed but who knows. I guess I'll have to go out sometime soon to see how much of an impact the new rules & range officers make on my shooting experience.

I do the new member orientation at my Club, which consists on the NRA First Steps program and a walk through of the Club/Range rules! There are so many new members that are new to shooting and they are given a lot to remember. I always tell them if your not sure don't do it til you find out from a Board member or RSO. Which have red or blue lanyards for our membership badges that also indicate BOD or RSO, general members have black!

I went to Brooks yesterday for the first time after the new rules were established. 3 of the pistol/rifle bays were in use when I got there. My son and I spent two hours at the range. We put clay targets up on the berm. There was no range officer that I could see. There was an attractive young lady that drove past a couple times in a golf cart but she never stopped to check ID or review what we were shooting at. We left at 4:30 PM (new rules state pistol bays close at 5) and the place was deserted. From a practical standpoint I did not see any change from prior times. YMMV.

In defense of Brooks being anal on rules that when you have 1700 members and 1300 are pistol/rifle you have to be like that otherwise it will end up like the wild west.

I would be very interested in joining but seems impossible unless you know someone there real well.

At My club we don't want people putting anything on the berms because eventually targets get put on top of the berms. In front of the berms is no problem, on the berms is a no go. We also discourage the use of clay targets on the rifle range just because, people like to hang them on the posts that support the target backer boards. If they would put them on a stand or a backer board that would be great but, they have to put them on the 4x4s that are holding up the entire target boards. Some people cannot figure out if you shoot the boards eventually they will break and ruin the entire target backer assembly.

Yeah at Brooks nothing is suppose to be on the frame work, nothing on top or out front.

I don't place anything higher then 5 foot , and there is still another 10 foot to the top .. no reason to go higher .

and i know what you mean on the target holders getting all shot up .. i made a nice one 8 foot wide and adjustable to fit your cardboard / target , pull 2 pins and drop or raise the upper cross bar to the height you need and pin it ...out of some scrap 2x4s i had laying around .. it lasted 3 week and it was all shot up and broken ..

@Acer-m14 it sucks that irresponsible people shoot at our clubs and have to ruin it for everyone else. The worst part is these people are never the ones who show up for work day at the range.
I have found bowling pins and clay birds on the top of our berms and It makes me wonder how people can be so stupid. I don't know if you saw my post about the pistol target shot at muzzle range with a12 gauge. The damn thing was built less than a week earlier.

Anyway that is the reason we do not allow anything on the berms. Not cause everyone is irresponsible, just cause a few are.

I have never gone there but I don't blame them. Ranges must be 100% anal retentive lest anti-gunners try and take them down. Check out genesse conservation league for example. It's a 2000+ member range in the heart of Penfield, surrounded by homes and apartments. After safety, they need to ensure no bullets ever leave the property.

As usual a dumbass has to ruin it for others. And yes it would be great to own a farm with 50 acres in the middle of nowhere so that you could do mag trumps, reactive targets, etc.

Yeah, that sucks when a few douches ruin it for the rest of us. I'm shocked at what some people actually think is ok.

The berms we use are a solid 15 foot high, I usually toss clays about 3 foot from the ground or so. Here's a somewhat typical type of setup we'll use when we go out. You can see all the orange on the berm behind the target stands.

I went a few weeks ago and finally encountered a range officer. He was cordial and polite, explaining why the new policy was put in place. I got the sense the club does not know who the violators were. The incident apparently occurred during a skeet/trap tournament. During those weekends the gates to the pistol bays are wide open so tournament participants can freely travel the course. There are many different locations on the property for trap shooting. I cannot believe they actually have one that is down range from the pistol bays. The berms at the pistol bays are high enough that responsible use won't cause any problems. But still. Why take the risk when there are so many other positions at the range for shotgun tournaments.

The range officer said the club would be moving back to regular hours soon. I just received an email indicating all members have to go to a new training course if they want to use the pistol bays. Not sure exactly how this is going to solve the problem.

I quit Brooks because I just couldn't see paying that kind of money for a 200 yard range, that was pretty much why I kept paying. The range was alway crowded, some gave me the creeps, while just up the road I had a one hundred yard range, hardly ever anyone there, and nobody fucks with you, so long Mr. Brooks hello unencumbered shooting.

I've been on the hunt for a local farmer that I can pay what I'd pay in membership so I could shoot in safety and peace. He could shoot my steel and I could pay for his liability insurance.

But having a range with members is probably like operating this forum, and there would always be a couple of assholes like myself ruining it for everyone else ;-p

If I found the right guy I'd buy us a plate rack!

Was this an individual email or an email that went out to a distribution list? I haven't had any communications from them about this.
