I have been to many ranges inside and out and as a observation most people are pretty dumb at the ranges when no one is in control. Last time I was at an indoor range I was hit in the shin from a guy two bays down I was three from the right wall. He hit the freaking wall with a .45 pissed me off so bad. Have not been back. I drive 45 minutes to PA during week days no one usually there.

I always pick the bay near the wall so that there is 50% less opportunity for the guy next to me to shoot me.

I took the safety course last Weds. No live fire but it is done at the range. It's basically a 30 min NRA Basic Firearm class.
Points they went over.
1. Where targets must be placed.
No targets placed on ground. No targets placed to high above berm. All rounds must impact the sand berm.
Use proper targets. Paper, cardboard. Steel must be approved by safety committee. No homemade steel, tv, vegetables, frying pans etc...
2. No handling of firearms at bench when people are down range.
3. New guest policies. Only 2 guests at a time. If they are shooting, you must be watching them and not shooting. You're responsible for their rounds.
4. Rifle Range.
No targets placed mid range. Only paper, cardboard targets. They must be hung on the snow fence.
Of course there is more but these are what I can think of right now. This might be basic stuff to most but they can't single out anyone. So everybody has to go through this course. Even the members that shoot shotgun only still have to take the course.

We realize the restriction in hours has been a great inconvenience for many of you, and we have been working on a plan to address the serious safety issues that occurred, while returning full access to the ranges as quickly as possible for members who understand and agree to abide by the safety rules.
On August 21, the Board approved a plan that:
2) Steel or metallic targets may not be used unless approved the by the club manager or the RB safety committee prior to use at Rochester Brooks.
3) Firearms should NEVER be handled when someone is downrange.
4) Eye and ear protection must be worn at all times on all RB ranges.
NOTE: If you do not take this safety course by the end of December, you will need to take both the classroom and on-range courses when you renew your membership. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to sign up for one of these courses as soon as the schedule is posted and registration is available.

- Establishes a safety committee to oversee and ensure safety across all of the shooting disciplines at Rochester Brooks. Bob Urban, a 25-year rifle/pistol shooter and Board member, will be the Chair of the committee
- Adopts the four Golden Safety Rules as follows:
2) Steel or metallic targets may not be used unless approved the by the club manager or the RB safety committee prior to use at Rochester Brooks.
3) Firearms should NEVER be handled when someone is downrange.
4) Eye and ear protection must be worn at all times on all RB ranges.
- Implements a safety course that needs to be completed by all members who wish to use the rifle/pistol ranges. Once a member has completed this brief course, he or she will return to full access to the ranges. The course will be held on the ranges to allow for demonstration of the four Golden Safety Rules as outlined above, and will also cover the NRA's 4 basic rules of safe gun handling.
- Provides prominent signage throughout the ranges and the club property alerting and reminding shooters of the importance of the safety rules governing the rifle/pistol ranges.

I remember going to the Brooks rifle range years ago and you wouldn't believe the junk left behind, old TV's, computers, and on and on, all shot to pieces. One time there was a guy and his girl friend blowing up a computer. That thing was a horrible mess, I said to the guy, you know, they can still get information off that hard drive. Hell I don't even know what a hard drive is, but the guy picked up his garbage before he left, and that was my aim.

Gotta do a slight hijack to do a shout-out to a late friend.
Back in the olden days ('80-90's) there was a USPSA club called Geneva Practical Shooters and at the end of the season they would hold a "Junkyard Dog" match which was 3 gun in a way -- bring a pistol, a rifle, a shotgun as there would be stages for all types -- shoot what you felt like. Some of you may remember this.
One of guys involved was a crazy bastard named Gary - we sometimes called him Scary Gary. One year he got some of those small (half dollar size) stick-on exploding targets. And he would occasionally slip one onto that back of a pistol target or the face of a pepper popper (and fog it with white paint) and wait for some unsuspecting shooter to hit it and touch it off. And then cackle like a demented chicken when the shooter almost pissed himself.
Gary retired to the Florida Keys and died in a boating accident. God, I do miss that crazy sombitch.
And, no, I don't recommend anyone doing this at Brooks.
