RPD officer died from accidental self-inflicted gunshot while driving
Penfield, N.Y. (WHAM) - A Rochester Police officer died on his way to work after accidentally shooting himself, which caused him to crash his SUV on Empire Boulevard Saturday night.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and RPD, Officer Manuel "Manny" Ortiz, 52, was found in an SUV in ravine shortly after 7 p.m.
Witnesses reported the SUV swerving shortly before it went off the road, according to Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter. At a news conference Monday morning, Baxter said Ortiz accidentally shot himself in the left thigh while driving west on Empire Blvd. Technicians on the scene recovered a single shell casing in the car and a single bullet in the driver's side door.
