I'd say they had barreled Actoin that they had run off and did need waiting for a rush on 223 rifles but it never happen thanks to the MVP and use of ar mags.
Ruger is finely catching on no one want the pay 50 buck for a magizine.

Makes sense. The only difference between the original version with proprietary mags and the new variant AFAIK is a different stock and some machining of the bolt. Maybe some modification to the reciever but I think its all in the bolt and stock.

Well, I finally got the American Ranch out to the range. Holy cow I love this gun!!! Did a quick, non precise sight in at 25yrds and then hammered a 12inch steel plate at 100yds the rest of the time. This gun is accurate as all get up. It also cycled perfectly with steel AR mags. So far I like the scope. I forgot to mark off where I left the turrets since they are exposed and there is no way to lock them. Not a big deal though. Next range session I'll bring a paint marker or something. I also want to try the BDC to see how it works and learn more about distance shooting. I haven't really shot past 135yrds.
I have some upgrades planned as well. I'd like to get a larger bolt handle/knob as well as an aluminum bolt shroud to replace the plastic one. Seems like it could crack in cold weather if knocked around. I may look into a muzzle device that directs more sound down range. This gun is LOUD. I am also going to make a thumb rest for my trigger hand out of Kydex. Being a lefty, it would enable me to hold the rifle aimed while cycling a round ( otherwise the bolt would hit my thumb).

Try the Troy Claymore, I put those on all of my threaded barrels to direct all the sound and blast down range.

You could also look at Kaw Valley muzzle brakes for directing sound down range. I have them on 3 of my guns and they work great.

I do as well. There is at least one aftermarket option out there though. Dove's Custom Guns
However, it would appear they changed the front sight in the set. It used to be a slip on one that didn't require gunsmithing to attach. If you check the pictures of their complete Ruger Ranch scout rifle conversion you will see it. Now the kit comes with a front sight that needs professional installation. You'd also need to have the scout scope mount installed as well.

Try faxon brakes. They have a few that are meant to be in perfect line with AR barrels so you can take off the gas block. May be what you're looking for.

I didn't see any linear comps there.

I'm wondering, is there really any benefit? Are non-threaded target crown barrels better at directing sound down range than a threaded barrel with a thread protector?

Also, i must of missed the linear part of that. i don't think you're going to be able to find one thin enough to come close to matching the profile of your barrel.

It would be cool if the mini14 used AR mags. Or if they managed some kind of conversion kit that looked and worked well. It would detach from the concept though, in that the mini14/30 are scaled down copies of the M14 which didn't take magazines that worked like an AR's. They rocked in like an AK

If they did ever make a mini14 that took AR mags they would almost have to make the conversion kits or there would be literally generations of pissed off customers.

It doesn't have to exactly match, I just want something more subtle and isn't outrageously wider than the barrel. The SAA Dragon's Head looks to be more what I'm looking for. In the picture it seems closer to the barrel diameter and isn't tripped out with aggressive styling.

It wont be any quieter with a linear muzzle brake than with just a thread protector. They both direct sound forward. If sound is your only issue and you dont want anything making the barrel look bad per your preference,,,,,put a thread protector on.

But a thread protector doesn't entend past the numuzz to it won't have any effect on the gases and their expansion.

The gases are going to go forward with an end cap because the hole in the barrel is pointed forward. The gases in a linear muzzle brake are going to go forward because the holes in the brake are pointing forward,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so noise will be the same. Maybe after reading all this I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to accomplish. Thought it was the noise issue and that you had a threaded barrel and were wondering what to do with it.

My question was if there would be a noticeable difference by putting a linear comp on when my barrel right now is a threaded muzzle with a thread protector on it (so basically a the same as a non-threaded target crown). As you've stated, there would be none since they both direct noise and gases down range. I knew that they both did, I just wasn't sure if adding the linear comp would enhance it.

The linear comp would mitigate (some) blast to the sides. That's about it. Think sawed off shotgun vs long barrel.

when talking about a linear comp you also have to consider that the comp gives the escaping gases time to expand, whereas straight off the muzzle those gases are looking for every which possible way out, resulting in a more violent boom. in a linear comp, the gases are preexpanded and happy to keep going forward because they aren't in the tens of thousands of PSI anymore. so yes linear comps will make a difference and from secondhand accounts it is an extremely noticeable one at that.

The video test shows what Ive been saying. Difference between a cap/crown and a linear brake is basically like 4 decibels. Which is basically nothing.

Short barrels are loud and only a suppressor will make a difference,,,,,,,which is info that I have no experience with,,,,just guessing.

The linear comp does help with barrel jump but not much. My adjustable gas block helps more.

4 decibels is indeed significant but only when talking about the difference between hearing safe and not. So basically 4 decibels only makes a difference in the silencer industry. You'll never even come close to hearing safe unsuppressed. But obviously silencers are a moot point in NY. So the linear comp is more for concussion than sound reduction. It reduces it for the shooter and some for people on the side of you. Concussion is especially an issue when dealing with short barrels. Traditional comps are all over the place. They can give off more or less concussion in any direction depending on the design. They do this with different degrees of effectiveness. Like everything else it's a trade off but the overwhelming pattern is that the more effective a comp is the more concussion the shooter/passerby's experience. The same can be said with all I've said with muzzle brakes. As a matter of fact I have one of the best muzzle brakes you can buy making my 308 feel like shooting a 22 but the concussion to the shooter and passerby's is tremendous. I once shot about 100 rounds out of my 308 (semiauto) and had a headache for hours afterwards. So this muzzle brake is obviously more suited for hunting/low volume shooting. Now with all that being said you can mitigate some things with these. Believe it or not the physics still work out with them.

Well, I went ahead and ordered a aluminum bolt shroud from Anarchy Outdoors as well as a new bolt handle and knob from Glades Armory. Well, I know I jumped the gun with Alien Gear when there was that shipping issue. They had great customer service and corrected it. Glades Armory may end up being a different story. I ordered their bolt handle and knob on the 4th of July and received an email stating it had shipped on the 5th. However, it has since stayed in "pre-shippment" and has not been handed over to the post office. It will be 4 business days tomorrow. They have no phone number to call and do all the CS through email (I should have known better). I payed through PayPal, so if there isn't a change in the shipping info by end of business tomorrow, I'll try contacting them through PayPal. Should I not hear back from them, I will file a claim against them. I don't understand why this crap happens, but it makes me feel stupid.
Anyway, I have since ordered a new bolt handle and knob from Anarchy Outdoors (what I should have done in the first place), as well as the SAA Dragons Head Linear Comp (what the hell).

Edit**** So naturally, right after I complain on here about Glades not shipping my order, I check the tracking again and sure enough, they managed to get the order to the post office. So it looks like we will have to have a little competition (perhaps a poll) about which bolt handle and knob people like the most. Could be interesting.
