Ruger American Ranch ... Care to give a review ?

Anyone have one or shot one that could offer a review on this rifle? shoots .223 rem /5.56. Not looking for one right away but who knows.. An itch may come over me ...

I had the ruger American in 450 bushmaster. I sold it to get a semi auto 450 bushmaster rifle. Would I buy the ruger American again? Yes absolutely! Fit and finish seemed better than the mossberg mvp series. The bolt operation was very slick. The 450 bushmaster is a very finicky cartridge and it fed it perfectly. Only complaint I had was the stock was plastic and had a lot of flex when firing, however I do realize that this type of rifle is built to a price point with a certain budget in mind. In my opinion ruger put the money where it counts in the barrel, bolt and operation of the action. Trigger was nice as well with a little take up and a nice clean break.

in summary:

worth the money, nice action, good accuracy, nice trigger, cheap stock. Definitely would buy it again.

I have a Ruger American in .308.. Put midrange Vortex glass on it. It's accuracy is a hell of a lot better than mine. I'll echo everything that @That_FNG said. I would definitely get another one if I was looking for that type of gun again.

I have one in 5.56. It has a nice CHF 1/8 barrel. I got it because I wanted a shorter barreled bolt action that takes AR mags. I originally wanted to turn it into a scout type, but I'd need to get a rail mounted on the barrel and front and rear sights put on. It's a great little gun. I don't think you'd regret getting one.

The issue with their scout rifle (other than cost) is that it doesn't take AR mags. It Doesn't even take mini14 mags.

Your right about that! I would have gotten one if it took Mini 14 mags..

How is the mag fit? I've heard mixed reviews. Been looking at the MVP for a while, but I haven't had a lot of spare cash laying around until recently.

Single feed, single stack aics magazines tend to much more reliable in bolt guns. I understand in .223 it makes no sense, but they work great jn .308 , 6.5, .243 etc.

I pretty sure you can get a 223 variant that uses AR mags.

I have the 7.62x39 model and I love it. I bought it because I wanted a light-weight general purpose rifle for plinking and hunting medium game. After the scope, brake, and cheek riser, it still weighs about 6 pounds.

It shoots accurately and reliably with the cheap Russian stuff. I've shot the thing at 700 yards with my own handloads. But, 400 yards with the Russian stuff is not difficult.

The only rifle-specific complaint is that I wish it came using 7.62x39 AR mags and not Mini-30 mags. You can get fairly cheap Mini-30 mags in free-state capacities, if you have a thing against frequent reloading.

My other issue is that the 7.62x39 is not as versatile as the 300 BLK or 223 rem. The 7.62x39 has a 0.310 bore. So, it can shoot 0.308 bullets, but the accuracy kinda sucks. If your gonna want to dabble with reloading heavy bullets or subsonic ammo, the 7.62x39 is not your gun. The variety of 0.310 caliber bullets just isn't there. Of course, you can't get cheap Russian 300 BLK ammo, so...

Nevertheless, the 223 variant has a nice twist rate and would be able to get both cheap ammo and a wide variety of bullets. It just may not be the preferred choice for medium game. As a pinker or varminter, I think I would go for it.

I've been thinking of another one in another caliber. I think I may wait for the inevitable 6mm ARC.

I like it. The catch is a little oddly placed and a bit stiff at first. It takes any kind of standard 308 AR mag, SR25, etc., which is nice.

I'll just add that my uncle is a big hunter (lives in Wyoming and hunts deer, elk, etc.) and loves his Ruger American and he has a safe full of awesome guns.

I might add that I have the standard Ruger American in 308 Winchester. I bought it to deer hunt. But, I got the long distance shooting bug. I ended up putting a magpul hunter stock on it.

If I was going for a non-ranch Ruger American. It would be the go wild predator in 6.5 CM.

apparently all I have to do is call Ruger to get the different mag catch and I will be able to use AR mags. Yay Calling Monday.

I will likely get these. The whole reason I got the American Ranch on 556 was that O wanted a scout type rifle that takes AR mags. The only thing the Ranch lacked were iron sights. The only issue I see though, is that the cheek weld for these rifles, for me at least, is way low. So mounting an optic that fits above the sights may prove problematic for cheek weld.

Mine uses mini-thirty mags. I wish it used AR mags.

Its too bad. The stock system is actually quite nice. The way they’ve bedded it makes it pretty accurate. The cheek riser works pretty well.
BTW, this thing is a dream to hunt with.

Mine is in the 450 Bushmaster. Surprisingly good groups from the big thumper. Fun gun for the money and I stole it with a store closing discount and another from the pretty manager. So , yes Im happy with it,,,, BUT as far as budget guns go I think the Savage Axis is a better gun.
