Rules, Regulations, Limitations of Tourniquet Use in NY

Let's see if I remember this correctly from the class they gave us in Officer Candidate School. If the blood is bursting from a vein, use a tutniquet to stop the blood flow. If it's gushing from the artery apply direct pressure to the wound.

This was in 1984, so my memory can be off, but this was my take away.
I did use a Heimlich maneuver on my nephew 7 years later to save him from choking on a candy, so the class wasn't a total waste.

you will know if you need a tourniquet when you see it. if not, direct pressure first, and if you cant stop it that way then go TQ. Ive also used them on people taking blood thinners in combo with pressure.

Man how’d I miss this thread. As stated no law for limiting TQ use also no script is needed to get one. EMS can remove a TQ in the field if it isn’t really needed. Like @spat stated perception of actual blood loss is often over estimated but better TQs are sometimes used unnecessarily than not used at all.
Personally I like the CAT TQ from North American Rescue if you can put on your belt you can use one blindfolded.. They come off easily as well some brands are hard to back off when applied correctly. Either way stay away from cheap Amazon crap like your life depends on it... because it might.
