Rusty shotgun shells

So, for some reason I have quite a few of these shotgun shells that have some rust on them. What I wanted to know is, what should I do with them?

I thought about maybe taking some sandpaper to them and cleaning them up, but wasn't sure if that's a good idea...

Any idea's?

I'm pretty sure they'll jam in the barrel and it'll be a pain to try and eject.

I'm kidding, I'm kidding. When in doubt, toss em out (safely).

Doubt they would get stuck but can see them marring up your chamber a bit. Steel wool as stated above or wire brush would probably work. Wipe some light gun oil on them to limit future erosion. Personally I'd chuck them though lol.

steel wool or sand paper will do fine. I would clean it up & shoot it.

Squirt a little WD-40 on some 000 steel wool, a little scrubbing will clean em right up, wipe them down with a clean, dry, rag and they are good to go.

This tells us at some point they were exposed to moisture. Steelwool lile othwrs said and the you should see if it is just surface rust or might be pitted all the way which I doubt based on the pictures. Clean them with a rug and use them asap.
Even it they are substantially tarnished the shotshell pastic casing goes into the base well past the rim so the shell is still well suported no matter.

I'd try to clean then up on a bench mounted wire wheel, avoiding the primers like the plague.

Right before I left for the gun club to burn them up shooting a round of trap.

If they were exposed to that much moisture/humidity, the powder was likely compromised. How much we talking here? From the pic I'd say Remington, and not their top quality loads. Personally, I'd dispose of them.

i have some slugs from last yr in the truck that rusted on the case .. i bet there just fine .. trust them for hunting .. nope .. plinking . sure ..

the photo i posted of the split hulls .. came from a estate sale .. old guy had them stored in the kitchen cupboard for years .. no rust at all .. the lead slug oxidized and swelled and split the case .. powder n primer just fine ..

Really doesn't take much moisture to do that to the case. I've had some shells rust like that loose inside a gun cabinet. No rust on any guns but some shells didn't look so good. Just a quick cleaning and they were gtg.

the ones in my truck in the console between the seats left over from last yr season had rust on them .. made in china maybe lol i was like WTF .. rusted really ..
