If you were going to purchase a 10 shot .22 revolver, which would you buy and why.

The S&W has a better trigger than the GP100. Also, the S&W you can mount an optic to it because it is drilled and Tapped for a base. I do not think the GP100 has that. I also think the S&W looks better.

Ive got several revolvers from both brands.
I have never had an issue with either.
I dont like the look of the S&W hammer lock.
In my opinion the Ruger looks better but most disagree.
I believe you can't go wrong with either.
The Ruger is significantly less $$$.

go with the S&W, mainly because of the cylinder release. I think if you need a fast reload, the S&W would be easier and faster.

I have seen 617 back in production not any GP100. I do own a 617 and really like it. I do own S&W and Ruger revolvers. Love them all.

just a thought on prices seems to me the Ruger is cheaper because the demand is not as high as the Smith doesn't mean 1 is better than the other it just means 1 is more desirable than the other
The S&W revolvers are like glocks.
Ask anyone who works in a gun shop.
When new gun owners come in, they very often want a glock.
The "hype" and notoriety of glock, especially in 9mm is pretty much all some people have heard of. I believe the same goes for S&W with revolvers, especially 357 magnum.
Many new gun owners have never heard of Ruger.
When they see the S&W name, it clicks with them.
In my opinion they both have pros and cons.
But, the price difference versus quality doesn't add up for me. Im a gun user, not a collector. My last few revolver purchases have been Ruger.

So I have a Ruger SP-101 8-shot .22 LR with a 4" barrel and like it pretty well.
If trigger pull really matters a lot to you, I think S&Ws generally have better triggers out of the box. If you plan to leave it stock, I say go with the Smith. I prefer Rugers with a trigger job over S&Ws with a trigger job, but that's probably personal taste at this point since my SP101 is easily my highest round-count handgun. Also, a Ruger is a lot easier to DIY a trigger job.
Anyway either will be fine plinkers, kit guns, or practice revolvers. Either should last a lifetime. The Ruger will be cheaper.

Ruger GP100 are like Glock in the sense they are incredibly tough and durable, and very easy to work on if you want to modify sights or triggers. If you want a gun with a good trigger that you can enjoy as is then it’s smith and Wesson (comparable model to comparable model)

I’d buy the S&W K frame before I’d ever buy the GP100 in .22LR.
The GP100 is bigger and heavier. It’s the same size as S&W L frame, which to me seems a bit overkill for .22.
I own a Smith & Wesson 17-6, the blue version of the 617.
It’s a ton of fun. If it were any bigger, it seems like it would get boring with almost no recoil.

I have owned a number of revolvers from S&W and Ruger. I love all of them in my possession. My SP101 .357 snubbie was my first carry gun, and it is great. Added a red dot laser grip to it, and that made it even better to shoot. I hand polished it to a mirror finish, and don't plan to ever sell it.
I owned a Ruger .22 revolver, but sold it. It just did not compare to the 10 round 617 I have, and I just never liked it as much as my 617. Mine is a bit older, and the smooth radiuses, curves, and looks of it bring a tear to my eye! It is a thing of beauty, and shooting it is great! And the operation and trigger are flawless. If I found another one, I would be sorely tempted to buy it.
